Field & Stream magazine has officially turned over its freshwater record-keeping responsibilities and all accompanying historical data to the International Game Fish Association. Michael J. O’Neill, publisher of Field & Stream, formally transferred custodianship of the records to Elwood K. Harry, president of IGFA, at a press luncheon held March 22, 1978 at the “21” Club in New York City. “We have been the repository of these records for a very long time and it has been part of the great outdoor tradition of our magazine,” said O’Neill. “In recent years it has become apparent that the keeping of both the fresh and saltwater game fish records is an international heritage which must be passed on carefully to future generations of fishermen. During the first week of July large schools of oama (baby weke) invaded the shorelines of Oahu. Everyone seemed to agree that the run was somewhat pre-mature as compared to previous years. Normally the peak season is from mid-July through early September, but this year a large school off Waimanalo just after the 4th of July weekend, put the bamboo brigade in high gear. Within days the schools were all over Oahu shorelines. The hot spots were the same as previous years. Waimanalo, Chinaman’s Hat, Wailupe Park, Magic Island, Pokai Bay, and Haleiwa Park. After about ten days of good productive fishing, the oama suddenly disappeared from all of the above mentioned areas. ■ Seabirds played an important role in early Hawaiian culture, in large part because of man’s intimate dependence upon the sea and his familiarity with its rich variety of resources. The names given the seabirds reflected the early Hawaiians’ ability to distinguish the many varieties by their calls, their colors and their behaviors. ‘Iwa (Great Frigatebird) was the thief who made his living by stealing food from other birds. U’au (Darkrumped Petrel), O’u (Bulwer’s Petrel) and A‘o (Newell’s Shearwater) were known by their mysterious calls, heard only at night in their nesting colonies. The red tail feathers of Koae-Ula (Red-tailed Tropicbird) distinguished this bird from its close relative Koae (White-tailed Tropicbird). One species, Pakalakala (Grey-backed Tern) was given a name identical to a fish well known to early Hawaiians. The…

A little over ten years ago, freshwater fishing tournaments started appearing on the mainland in a big way. At present, this trend has expanded until there’s umpteen fishing associations of one sort or another, holding lord-only-knows how many tournaments, nationwide. And these aren’t penny-ante operations, either as total prize money in some of the more prestigeous affairs runs up toward six figures. Now, with this kind of cash at stake, the entire subject of freshwater angling has started getting a lot closer scrutiny than previously. There are just too many men who make their living on the fishing tournament circuit nowadays (just as golf and tennis pros have done for years) for the subject to be left entirely to chance. AKU MARINES are located on the Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station. Membership is open to all military personnel, active and retired, and their dependents. Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month and boat dives are made about 16 times monthly. Equipment is available to members and the club has several rubber boats. Aloha there, mates, Sea conditions aren’t favorable or good, for fishing anyway. So let’s take this time, lift those hatches, crawl down in that bilge and let’s look at the electrical system this month. Starting off with the battery itself, or batteries, let’s check for signs of corrosion. Pull off the cables and look at the posts, one on each end, positive and negative. Let’s take a knife or wire brush and clean or rough up the surface before reinstalling the cables. There’s two ways to clean them, as I said, with a wire brush or a knife or common Coca-Cola. I’ve been casting a long time on shoreline and what a disgrace to see long nets blocking main channels and reefs where ulua come and feed. You know, I was casting on shoreline, then these netters came and laid their nets right in front of me. It was about 300 ft. long. Boy, what a disgrace to the netters. The annual rainbow trout fishing season in the Kokee Public Fishing Area on Kauai opens Saturday, August 5, 1978, and continues through Saturday, September 30, 1978. Anglers may fish daily for a period of 16 consecutive days from August 5 through August 20; thereafter, for the remainder of August and throughout the month of September, trout fishing is permitted only on Saturdays, Sundays and State holidays. Prospective fishermen must have valid 1978-79 Freshwater Fishing Licenses before fishing in the Kokee PFA. Good fishing can usually be expected from all of the fishing areas during the opening weekend of the season, particularly in the Kawaikoi Stream, Waiakoali Stream, Koaie Streams, Waialae Stream, Puu Lua Reservoir and the ditch systems. I have never, but never, seen such beautiful fishing as we are having this year in Kona. We have boated 22 marlin and several ahi. Boats are coming in with doubles, triples and quadruples almost every day. Tione Jodd on the High Flyer has caught 4 marlin on 2 separate days last week. On the Betty C U we have had 4 days that we caught two heavy fish and on one day we left Honokohau Harbor at 8 o’clock and we had three good-sized marlin in the boat by 10 o’clock! Fishermen are hard put to remember a time when it has been so good. There are so many recently arrived charter skippers, none of them have seen such fantastic action. Maui’s offshore fishing action continues to be just about unbelievable. No one can remember any time in recent history when the fishing action was so good for so long. There are literally marlin everywhere, and that includes places where marlin aren’t supposed to be—like in 30 fathoms of water off Olowalu, and on the ono run near Molokini and near Ule point on Kahoolawe. 600-lbs seems to be about the top limit for the Marlin around Maui in the last month, but what the billfish lack in size compared to the Kona and Waianae catches, they make up for in numbers. Captains like Dave Hudson on the EXACT and Dave Padgett on the NO KA OIIV are scoring marlin daily, and multiple catches like Dave Russell’s four marlin in one…
