In 1978, the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament is twenty years old. It is Hawaii’s largest international fishing tournament, and one of the best known fishing competitions in the World today. Every year since nearly the first, 75 teams have gathered in Kailua-Kona for a week of intense fishing competition. The pomp and pagentry rivals every other event held in Kona in the span of a year, and generally, the fishermen are justly rewarded for their efforts. A lot of years of data collection has allowed the Directors of the Billfish Tournament (as it is popularly known) to analyze the coming year and plan the tournament for a week when the fishing almost has to be good. Pokai Bay, Oahu, Hawaii Participants in last year’s Hawaiian Invitational Allison Tuna Tournament (HIATT) witnessed the elimination of two former world records and saw a woman angler from New Zealand tie the 30# test world record as well. It was a tournament that will not soon be forgotten. Riding on a four-year success streak, the 5th annual HIATT is scheduled July 17 to 21 out of Pokai Bay, Waianae, Oahu. It should be bigger and better than ever, if early signs are any indicator. This tournament, which sees about 65 boats gather in the sleepy little harbor at Pokai Bay once a year, is popular for two reasons: one is the tackle busting ahi (allison yellowfin tuna) that are caught every year and the other is the comeraderie that the…

Early last year, two of Hawaii’s most prestigious fishing organizations got together and planned a new tournament, solely for members of Hawaii’s many fishing clubs. They wanted the tournament to be local in color, style and perspective. What they developed was the Fiftieth State Invitational Trolling Tournament, and what they spawned was a very successful Hawaiian-style fishing tournament. The groups were the Hawaii Big Game. Fishing Club (HBGFC) and the Big Island Association of Trolling Clubs, and between them they represented a sizable hunk of Hawaii’s sportfishing public. Because Hawaii’s fishermen have traditionally fished with 130-lb test line—that line class was made legal. The first annual Glas-Ply Fishing Tournamentwas held on Saturday and Sunday, June 10 and 11. The tournament was sponsored by Hanapa’a Marine (Glas-Ply dealer on Oahu), Rainier Beer, Anglers Specialties and Glas-Ply boats. The only real qualification for entering the competition was of course that all fishing be done on a Glas-Ply Boat. Some 46 Glas-Ply boats entered the competition. For two days these boats and their crews filled the waters off Oahu. Each day the boats and their crew returned to Hanapa’a Marine at 290 Sand Island Access Road to weigh their catch, drink a few Rainiers and talk over fish tales, those they caught and those that got away. Some feel that a fisherman is known by the tackle he keeps when, in fact, he is known by the way he keeps his tackle. Mishandled and improperly cared for fishing equipment is the mark of a careless and imprudent fisherman regardless of how much he was willing to pay for his rods, reels and lures in the first place. Even moderately priced equipment, when well managed, performs better than the highest-priced paraphernalia if the latter is a conglomeration of corroded guides, frayed lines, seized reels, battered lures and rusted hooks. In fishing, looking good is an important guide to working well. Rusted hooks don’t hook fish. Battered lures won’t attract them, if the damages alter the seductive action or appearance. There is something very strong and comfortable about sampans. They feel heavy and solid and capable, plowing through the ocean. Some people were just born to be good cooks, and Irene Kapoi of Pokai Bay, Waianae, certainly is one of these. Irene can fix up a delicious meal out of things most people wouldn’t even try, such as pigs’ feet and turkey tails. Her fish dishes are famous, as any person fishing in HIATT’s ahi tournament can testify to. Irene will be cooking for the fishermen again this year at their comfortable home right on the beach at Pokai Bay. Last year she served over 530 hungry guys and gals in one sitting. Irene was the oldest of nine children (four girls and five boys) and was raised in the Kalihi area. Her father, Chong Sing, was chief cook of the Ving Fong Restaurant near Aala Park in the 1930’s,…

In the past 15 years, I have had the good fortune to work on many boats, equipped as you would expect, with varying types of power and propulsion ystems. Just as I think I have seen every problem inti dilemma facing today’s boater, up crops a vhole new set of problems. Waianae Small Boat Harbors Representative On March 30, 1978, the first Public Hearing concerning the Shoreside facilities for the Waianae Small Boat Harbor was held at the City & County Satellite Office. At this Meeting, a presentation of the planned Shoreside facilities and parking area was presented to the general public and boaters by the State Harbors Division.
