■ The marine environment has always been important to Hawaii’s residents. Prior to the Caucasians, the Hawaiians utilized many of its marine resources. The Hawaiians were skilled fishermen, capable of catching many species of fish. They were aware that there are many marine animals. Some were used for food, others for medicine, tools and implements. Some were used for decoration and still others were used to locate fish. The Hawaiians recognized the importance of all the sea’s inhabitants. We at Sea Life Park do too. Thus, this column.
