There is no substitute for experience, and unless you have been going to Kona every summer for 40 years, there is no way you can assimilate the kind of experience the hometown fishermen have, in time to be able to fish their waters. What follows is an attempt to digest some of the best-known Kona secrets and make them available to newcomers to the fabled giant marlin waters of Hawaii’s leeward coast. Maui has seen its fair share of big fish since I last filled this column with random notes, and all of them are exceptional catches. In the midst of a real lull in Maui’s offshore fishing, the WHITE WITCH returned to Lahaina harbor with a 596 pound Pacific blue marlin early last month. Very few fish flags had fluttered from the tops of outriggers in either Maalea or Lahaina harbor the week prior to their catch. At the helm for Maui’s biggest fish so far this year was Capt. Randy “R.O.” Orkisch, who was ably assisted by Guy “the Gorilla” Savidan. ■ This tale of a big fish has so many humorous sidelights it bears telling. As I have pointed out many times, I go to Kona every summer for the main purpose of catching marlin. The fish are there. The water is delightfully smooth. The warm sun in the light breezes is good for my aging bones. When you catch a big fish it is easy to back up to the dock with an anchor out, Tahitian style, and lift it off your swim step with the electric hoist. ■ Fish populations under supposed natural conditions can generally maintain a degree of equilibrium in which size distributions, standing crops, predator-prey ratios, growth rates, and other indices in a given habitat tend towards constancy. This equilibrium is transitory and can be temporarily or irretrievably lost in the event of environmental upsets such as altered weather patterns, immigration of new species, geological changes, to mention only a few of many possibilities. Take a good look at that strange thing, your favorite lure. It is not the fact that fish are so regularly caught on such weird and unlikely contraptions that mystifies me. It is the changeability of it all. The lure that works today, may not work at all tomorrow. The secret weapon of last year won’t even rate a sniff today. You can always explain it by saying that even a fish’s taste can change. That hardly seems likely. Many people have said that the home fleet has the edge in the Jackpot tournament. Surely Dave Rockett’s win in the state’s first Jackpot tournament held in Lahaina last year tended to prove that out. On the other hand, the next four places in Lahaina were taken by outsiders—new to the waters of Maui, and the same type of results could show up in Kona. The Kona Gold Jackpot entry list is predominantly made up of Kona boats, and if the hometown boats have any advantage, then surely the charter boats which fish Kona waters daily year in and year out have the greatest advantage of all. ■ The marine environment has always been important to Hawaii’s residents. Prior to the Caucasians, the Hawaiians utilized many of its marine resources. The Hawaiians were skilled fishermen, capable of catching many species of fish. They were aware that there are many marine animals. Some were used for food, others for medicine, tools and implements. To All Boaters, Fishermen and Divers, before you leave home the Coast Guard Auxiliary suggests that you make out a Float Plan, such as the one below with a description of your vessel, where you are going, when you will return and etc. and leave it with your wife, friend or relative on shore. It will save time if you are in trouble and the Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary will know where to look for you. A Float Plan should always be updated with any changes of plan and terminated when you finish the trip. The survey conducted ran for a period of four months. As there are seasonal variations in ocean conditions, fish runs, and number of people fishing, the survey lacks vital information pertaining to a full year of fishing pressure. Most of Hawaii’s fishing community would agree that a survey is not needed to inform them that the fishing in the state is relatively poor and growing worse. However a survey retrieves statistical information that can aid in, and provide a basis for an effective management program. The conditions of our marine resources will continue to be depleted in response to a growing population whose main lecieational base is the ocean.
