It had been a hectic week. It was the week of the company seminar being held on Maui. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were spent in reviewing the program and checking the facilities. All delegates must be comfortable and well satisfied. Everything must be in shipshape. Thursday the delegates with their wives started arriving. Eager, bright-eyed and ready to enjoy the weekend. “How’s it, Brother. Long time no see.” Friday and Saturday were busy seminar days. At night everybody was happy—good food, lots of drinks and hearty companionship. “Nice party, but the program! ■ Although the associated publicity has been considerably less than would seem to be warranted, the Island of Oahu has again been afflicted by a serious drought. The winter rains, which normally are expected to begin in October, have not come as of the date of this writing. January was the driest on record for that month in the files of the National Weather Service. Already the Board of Water Supply has issued a warning about possible water rationing later in the year and has urged the public to curtail immediately any nonessential uses of water. Agricultural crops, sugar in particular, are suffering from the continued lack of rainfall. Freshwater fish populations have of course inevitably been damaged by the extended drought. Have you ever wondered if the guy down the coast or around the comer is having better luck than you? Have you ever been curious as to how successful you’ve been with respect to your fellow fishermen? During the months of September-December 1976, Hawaii Marine Research conducted a Statewide creel census survey for the Division of Fish and Game to help close the information gap concerning the extent of fishing pressure on Oahu and the neighbor islands. REQUESTING A REVIEW OF PRESENT STATUTES AND REGULATIONS CONCERNING THE USE OF GILL NETS WHEREAS, there is considerable concern amongst shoreline fishermen due to a serious decline in the number and size of gamefish in Hawaiian waters; WHEREAS, the use of gill net has been increasing steadily in recent years with the availability of cheap, easy to maintain, lightweight monofilament gill net; WHEREAS, decreased catches and increased availability has caused many net fishermen to use longer lengths of gill net in order to capture their usual quota; WHEREAS, Gill net fishing is non-selective and overfishing with gill nets can cause a serious decline in reef fish stocks; WHEREAS, the use of monofilament gill net has been banned in Alaska because “it is too efficient,” and many other states have enacted…

■ Fishing was excellent on Maui last month, with good catches being reported in all areas. The charter fleet brought in lots of marlin and mahimahi. The present leaders in the Maui marlin derby are the EXACT out of Lahaina and JUN KEN PO out of Maalaea. Maui’s bottom fishermen are reporting good catches of bottom fish as well. Perhaps the best indicator of fishing action on Maui are the results of two recent tournaments; the Lahaina Fishing Club First Annual Wahine Fishing Tournament—and The Bruce Carter Let’s Go Fishing Shoreline Fishing Tournament. The Bruce Carter Shoreline Tournament was a major success on Maui. Bruce arrived at the Maalaea Boat and Fish Club facility to find literally hundreds of people awaiting, and over a hundred more entrants than he expected.…
