■ Last month HAWAII FISHING NEWS covered a number of the bills pending in the legislature which had some effect on the lives of Hawaii‘s fishermen. Now, with the legislature near the end of its 1977 session, we can take a look, and see what’s happened to most of those bills. When I talked with Brooks Takenaka from the University of Hawaii Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program recently, I got a big part of that answer. “For all intents and purposes,” he said, “none of the fisheries related bills made it through this legislative session.” Although he was speaking mainly about commercial fisheries bills which were all virtually dead as we go to press, he may as well have been discussing all fishing bills. ■ The first issue of HAWAII FISHING NEWS featured a photo of a potential new world record Rainbow Runner and a very proud, young angler who had captured it. On April 6, 1977 that record was broken by another proud, young angler. Bret Noble, a thirteen year old from Kailua-Kona, went on his first fishing trip to South Point with well known Kona skipper Capt. Peter Hoogs and while serving as working crew on an otherwise commercial fishing trip, Bret found himself tied into a hefty rainbow runner. Peter had decided to head for home, and was running along the 40 fathom ledge right off South Point when the fish latched onto a small jet head lure dressed in blue, pink and white skirts. ■ The first time I heard about autopilots was back in Seattle a few years ago, when I read about an accident in the newspaper. There was a big luxury yacht I had seen many times, about ninety-five feet or so, whose nickname was “Not Sober Since Last Summer.” They used to have big floating dinner parties. During one of these parties, the yacht was put on autopilot, and proceeded to run head on into a bridge one calm evening. The resulting damage to both the yacht and the skipper’s ego was a great lesson in how not to use an autopilot. When an autopilot salesman says that the pilot takes the place of a man, he does not mean the navigator, or for that matter, the skipper. He means,…

■ The photograph above was taken at the wedding of one of my fishing companions, Otis “Red” Buttler, held at my home several years back. Red asked my son, Peter, who is quite adept with a camera, to be the official wedding photographer. The above photo was one of many taken at this gala event, held on my dock, solemnized by the Reverend Abraham Akaka, and followed by a delightful Hawaiian reception, replete with orchestra and beautiful hulas. Red was so enamored with the picture, he had it blown up to an 18 by 16 inch enlargement which I have appropriately framed and hung on my lanai. ■ Squid, when properly rigged, have proven to be one of the most effective baits for blue water trolling. One explanation is that the squid is found to inhabit oceans around the world making it a familiar primary food source for predator game fish everywhere. Almost all artificial lures used today are sporting plastic skirts resembling the natural shape of the squid. This is proven testimony to the effectiveness of squid as a likely bait. Because the fresh squid is a natural bait, it works best when trolled at speeds slower than the speed required for the artificial look alikes. This speed factor offers more good reasons to give fresh squid serious consideration: 1) Slower speeds mean less fuel consumption; at today’s prices this is a prime consideration. 2) The…

M. G. Paschoal Memorial Fishing Tournament Maalaea Boat and Fish Club Announcement The Maalaea Boat and Fish Club has announced its annual M. G. Paschoal Memorial Fishing Tournament for the long weekend of May 28,29 and 30. The tournament is held annually to commemorate Manuel Gomes Paschoal, known as the Dean of the Territorial Legislature. Mr. Paschoal was instrumental in getting the first Maalaea Breakwater built and later pushed a bill through the legislature for the construction of the second breakwater. Paschoal was also one of the key individuals in the founding of the Maalaea Boat and Fish Club and he contributed a large measure of financial support to the fledgling club. His designation as ‘Dean of the Territorial House’ comes as a result of the fact that he served…

Skip Jack (aku) commercial fishing has been the mainstay of Hawaii’s fishing industry since the mid-eighteen hundreds and may be facing extinction unless much needed innovations are rapidly put into effect and accepted by traditionalized fishermen. Skip Jack became popular in Hawaii when vast numbers of Japanese were brought over to work in the cane fields. Aku was one of their favorite food sources and soon Japanese fishermen (often from two fishing villages in Japan) came over to fill the demand using the live bait, pole and line technique still used today. The fleet grew to its maximum size just before the Second World War as more and more sanpans were added and finally totalled 48 vessels. ■ The site blessing and groundbreaking for the new Waianae Boat Harbor was held April 19th with Maile lei-covered dignitaries along the oceanside of the Waianae Regional Park in Waianae. The Honorable George R. Ariyoshi, Governor of the State of Hawaii, greeted more than one hundred and fifty involved and interested spectators after a welcoming address given by E. Alvey Wright, the Director of Transportation of the State of Hawaii. Brigadier General Maurice D. Roush, Division Engineer of the Pacific Ocean Division of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, spoke briefly on the project plans and introduced Paul I. Banks, President of Hawaiian Dredging and Construction Co. who have been awarded the contract for the first phase of the construction. The site was then blessed by the Reverend Abraham…

■ Flying into Keahole Airport in Kona the first thing any fisherman will note is the placidly calm, deep blue ocean that stretches nearly all the way from Upolu Point to the North, to Ka Lae or South Point. The volcanic peaks, Mauna Kea, Hualalai and Mauna Loa form a giant stone wall against Hawaii’s prevailing tradewinds and except for an area near Kawaiahae Harbor where the winds funnel through a gap over the Waimea area and cause locally gusty conditions, the water remains unseasonably calm, year round. There is something else that any fisherman will detect right away, and that is that Kona is a fishing town. Barry Bovee was new to sportfishing when Capt. John Jordan caught him ‘his first marlin a number of years ago, a firm friendship ensued. In 1975 that friendship as well as the Bovee’s trust of ‘Capt. Phrogie’ was cemented when Barry’s wife Nancy landed a 50 pound test world record marlin while fishing aboard the 38’ Bertram sportfisher CHRISTEL. In early April of this year the long standing friendship and two years of searching was consummated when Capt. Jordan and his Co-Captain Scott Crampton arrived in Kona with a 35 foot Bertram named REEL AFFAIR. Owned by Hawaii Makai Ltd. whose principles are John Jordan, Barry and Nancy Bovee, the vessel fell right into its place in the Kona sportfishing scene and proceeded to land a 300 plus marlin on…
