■ I must confess I was somewhat surprised to hear Chuck Johnston say, “Deal, we want you to write a column for Hawaii Fishing News on ‘blue water fishing’ in Hawaii.” Why me? When I think of all the outstanding “blue water” fishermen in our islands, both amateur and professional, who know so much more about fishing than I could ever hope to know and who prove it every trip they take by their bulging iceboxes and the many fish flags fluttering from their outriggers, I am further mystified. ■ Akule fishing at night. I can’t think of a more enjoyable way to spend an evening. This silvery night feeder provides both fun and food for those who partake in such a night time adventure. MAUI’S CHARTER FLEET ■ When you think of charter sportsfishing in Hawaii, your mind will often settle on Kewalo Basin. This proud fleet of sampans and production boats alike have plied the waters of Penguin Banks, Barbers Point and Waianae for decades. You may also think of Kailua-Kona, home of one of the finest sportsfishing fleets in the world. Trolling slowly over famed Kona waters, or live baiting on the Keahole light ‘grounds,’ the Kona fleet has produced more world’s records than any other area in the state. Increasingly though, the Maui charter fleet is coming into its own. For many years it was made up of reject boats from the Honolulu fleet, old workhorses, put out to pasture so to speak. FIRST ANNUAL 50th STATE TROLLING TOURNAMENT The Big Island Fishing Council and the Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club have announced preliminary plans for the First Annual 50th State Trolling Tournament to be held in Kona, August 10, 11, 12 and 13th. This Tournament is open to all teams representing organized fishing clubs in the state and will include competitive fishing for the four major flag fish; Marlin, Ahi, Mahimahi and Ono. Only artificial lures will be allowed and IGFA rules will apply. Fishing hours will be from 6:00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. on August 10, 11 and 12th. The Tournament ends at 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 13th. An awards barbecue will be held Saturday afternoon. The Kona Hilton will be tournament headquarters and all fish will be weighed in…

■ I have often gone fishing with my friends who come over from Honolulu. We have gone practically all over the Island of Molokai, Including Kalaupapa to fish. As many as 20 poles would line the seashore. The largest ulua I have caught before this last one was a 65 pounder. It was caught with a feathered lure on a 488 Mitchell spinning rod. I used a 40 lb. Andy test line and it took me 45 minutes to bring it in on that small line. I have had many dreams of one day catching a 100 pounder. That day came on February 4, 1977 at 5:30 p.m. My family and I go through our usual routine every Friday as we pack our things and head for the beach. We…

Pacific Casting Club held its Annual Awards Banquet at the Hyatt Regency on February 26, 1977. Largest ulua honors went to Danny Masuda with a 69 lb. ulua. The total weight ulua award was taken by Joe Raydon with 856 lb. 12 oz. Largest oio went to Glenn Tanabe with a 13 lb. fish. The Unusual catch award was gaffed by Bob Mori with an unbelievable 70 lb. ahi taken on a 3/0 reel and 50 lb. test line. Glenn Saiki was voted Sportsman of the Year for 1976. ■ Ever since the days of the earliest Polynesian settlers on the Island of Hawaii, about 500 AD, the placid waters along the Kona coast of that island have been famed for their marlin and tuna fishing. The first Hawaiians were voyagers from Tahiti who came to the Hawaiian archipelago in vast fleets of double-hulled sailing canoes. These early Hawaiians were superb fishermen and even fished with man-made lures trolled at good speeds behind swiftly paddled canoes to attract the various species of tuna. The abundance of game fish astounded the Hawaiians. There were mammoth Pacific Blue Marlin.
