A year ago one of the U.S. Government’s rare and endangered species of wildlife turned up unexpectedly on Hawaii‘s windward, shore. Though tiny in size, a hatchling hawksbill turtle, delivered to Sea Life Park for special care and feeding, created considerable excitement. The animal was found by Nancy Johnson in a tidal pool near Malaekahana. The hawksbill turtle(Eretmochelys imbricata) is one of the world’s eight identified species of sea turtles, and among the three known to inhabit Hawaiian waters. (The other two are the green sea turtle and the leatherback.) Marine scientists in the Islands agree that the hawksbill is rarely spotted in the open ocean and many believed they had ceased to breed here, due to Oahu’s heavy population and construction near their natural breeding grounds on the sand…

Step One: Tie harness line (#24 cotton) to three equally spaced point on net ring with clove hitch (figure A). Start with 5 feet line and secure two ends at two points on ring. The hottest spin-fisherman on the Big Island today must be one Hugh Fleming of Hilo and a native of Raton, New Mexico. From November 1976 to January 1977, he has amassed a total of 38 papios ranging from 7 pounds to 37 pounds. Unofficial weight recorded is 410 pounds. Spinning has become a specialty with Hugh as his close friends will say, “That haole sure works hard in his business as well as at fishing.” A relatively newcomer to island fishing circles, he has out-fished many of our boys who have been spin-fishing for many years and is the envy of many people. For those Hawaii Fishing News readers who have a gourmet appetite, have a spirit for adventure and are in peak physical condition, have a crack at what I’ve named the “Koolau Bulls.” After dark, along the vine, tree and Mondo grass lined streams that bubble and gurgle down the steep volcanic foliage covered Koolaus, can be found what must be the world’s largest bull frogs. At publication time we did not know when or from where the bull frogs were introduced to the Islands. The mere size and number of frogs indicate they have adjusted well to island living. A lot of people have been writing about the 90 foot airplane of late, so thought I’d get my licks in. To begin with, the first question asked after someone finds out you know the location of the plane is, Where is it? Can you give me the landmarks? Here are the directions: Line up the second telephone pole from the right with the second smoke stack from the left and then line up the first antenna with the third antenna and drop your hook! Tides have probably the single most important influence regarding feeding habits of salt water fish, especially those which feed in the bays, along the beaches or over the reefs. The moon is another factor which has a great effect on the feeding habits of fish. Starting with our March issue Hawaii Fishing News will furnish its readers with a tide and moon calendar for that particular month. Experts rank the brightly colored tucunare as one of the hardest fighters pound-for-pound of any fish when taken on hook-and-line and also as perhaps the best-eating of any freshwater fish. Wealthy sportsmen invest many dollars in trips to South and Central America just to feel, and later describe, the tug of tucunare on their lines. Several attempts have been made to introduce the fish to the southern United States, but water temperatures even in Florida inevitably dropped below the minimum required for their survival. Efforts on the mainland are now directed towards introducing the fish to receiving waters for warm water discharges from power plants. If asked to name the most popular gamefish in the country, it’s likely that not one out of four local fishermen could respond correctly — it’s the freshwater black bass. Now when I say popular, it should be understood that I do know whereof I speak. There are bass to be caught in every state except Alaska, and they are avidly sought everywhere they are found. There are several nationwide organizations, as well as innumerable regional and local associations devoted solely to the pursuit of bass angling. The Hawaii Council of Diving Clubs (HCDC) at its Annual Divers Banquet on Feb. 11, named JACK E. CLOTHIER, as the outstanding SCUBA Diver in Hawaii for 1976. Each of the sixteen Dive Clubs belonging to HCDC voted for the recipient of the year award. Jack was selected because of the outstanding service he has rendered the diving community throughout the years. His achievements listed in part are: “During the year 1976 Jack has been most active in the club as well as the diving community as a whole.
