Catch of a Lifetime Things are starting to look up after a slow start to 2021. Some schools of akule have been showing up here and there. Let’s hope Waimea Bay comes to life and we get a couple months of good fishing before those fish are netted. I’m amazed at how good the fishing can be here when akule and ‘opelu come in to spawn. With just the simplest fishing equipment, basically a rod and reel, there’s no telling what you might catch when the bay is full of life. As soon as these fish are netted, your chances of catching a fish of a lifetime drop to almost zero. With summer here, the fish are biting and poles are bending! Good luck to all the ulua fishers lining the coastlines and dropping hooks off their boats. While there is some local knowledge that ulua are spawning this time of year, we still don’t know the exact length of their spawning season, if they spawn multiple times throughout the year, or if their spawning seasons vary on different islands. Poseidon Fisheries Research (PFR) has been working on life history studies of different local reef fish including the most popular recreational fishing target: ulua. We spent the last few years collecting samples to learn about their age, growth and reproduction. You might have seen us out at tournaments cutting up fish and talking story. Seaman Theodore Kirkbride of Coast Guard Station Maui was named the Coast Guard’s Enlisted Person of the Year. Since being assigned to Station Maui in 2018, Theodore has developed his love for emergency response, created trainings for fellow guardsmen and community members, and invested in local kupuna and keiki. “I joined the Coast Guard seeking adventure; however, since reporting to my first unit, my whole purpose behind joining has changed dramatically,” Theodore said. “I realized how much we are able to do for the community. I may have joined for adventure, but I’m staying because I feel like I can help build better communities.” As a volunteer in the peer-driven stress management group, Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), Theodore has led grief counseling sessions in Maui County for more than…

STEP 1 The first cut is made just back of the pelvic fins. Slide knife under the bones connected to the pelvic fins, cutting forward at a slightly upward angle to the grill plate. STEP 2 Turn fish on its side and begin a second cut just behind the pectoral fin. This cut ends on the top of the head just about where the meaty part of the fish meets the bony portion of the head. O‘ahu has a publicly accessible county-operated shooting facility where participants can fire rifles, pistols and shotguns at appropriate targets. Other islands have similar public shooting range facilities, either County or privately operated. Until recently, Hawai‘i County public target shooting was restricted to a County-operated skeet and trap range, where only shotguns could be used. During the last 20 years, more than 140,000 firearms were registered in Hawai‘i County. Current and historic breakouts of firearm registration type indicate shotguns account for about 10-percent of total registrations. So, about 14,000 of the 140,000 guns registered over the recent 20-year period could be legally fired at the island’s sole public shooting range. Cover Story: Maui Ohana’s Lucky Camping Trip I reside on the east side of Maui, in Hana, where I was born and raised. One recent weekend, I took my ‘ohana camping in Hana in hopes of bringing up some ulua. On Thursday night, I was able to bring up two good-sized ulua weighing 43.8-lbs and 55-lbs. On Friday, we spent the day catching bait and flew our lines out in the evening. We had a few strikes but no ulua until about 3:30 a.m. on Saturday. My nephew landed his first ulua, which weighed 17 lbs. We spent the rest of the day chilling, catching bait and celebrating my baby girl, who made eight months that day. That night, hoping for some good luck, I cast my daughter’s pole. Sure…

Ghost Net Hotline Kristen Kelly, specialist with Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) Protected Species Program, announced that the state has teamed up with four nonprofits to create a ghost net hotline. Now concerned fishers and ocean-goers can call to report ghost nets, known killers of marine life including turtles, humpback whales and monk seals. Kristen explained, “The idea is to have people call in hazardous nets immediately. We can mount a rapid response to remove these nets from our shorelines as quickly as possible and before they drift back into the open ocean.” The hotline has a distinct Hawai‘i flavor and a bit of pidgin thrown in. Hilo Trollers’ June 6th Tournament The Hilo Trollers ran their second monthly tournament of the season on Sunday, June 6. The weather got a little bumpy in the afternoon, but there was a nice ‘ahi chop and a “coming up” tide. Twenty-two boats were entered, and 11 landed qualifying flagfish. This catch rate was similar to previous years’ tournaments held during that part of the season. There were a number of new participants, as well as returning old-timers. This event saw the largest number of entries of any Hilo Trollers’ tournament during the last few years, so the club is doing well. The plan was to go hiking and venture with some of my friends to one of the most beautiful places on the Big Island. I was debating whether or not I wanted to lug my pole and lures on the hike. After some last-minute convincing, I ended up bringing them. It was a good thing I did! We got a late start, but everything went perfectly, as planned. We wandered through some amazing spots along the way and soaked up every part of our hike, taking tons of photos and laughing the whole way there. As of April 1, 2021, operators of boats less than 26 feet long are required to wear an engine cut-off switch (ECOS) link while planing or above displacement speed, in an effort to reduce runaway boat incidents. ALCOAST Commandant announced the requirement to use an ECOS while operating recreational vessels and enforcement guidance for boarding officers. The fine for noncompliance is not more than $100 for the first offense. Enforcement This requirement applies to all recreational vessels built starting on January 1, 2020. Through the National Boating Safety Advisory Council, the U.S. Coast Guard has initiated a boating safety program to educate the public on the use and benefits of ECOS on recreational vessels. Marlin conjure up images of charter boats, trophies and a thrilling fight between an angler and a powerful ocean giant. For some reason, we rarely think about eating them. Even in the old days, Hawaiians only considered marlin “fairly good,” not nearly as favored as aku. The marlin mystique has fooled us all. Those large fish of which dreams are made, as well as Hawai‘i’s other billfish, are as tasty, easy to cook and versatile as Hawai‘i’s more popular eating fish, but they just aren’t as readily available.
