In addition to funding the distribution of 350,000 servings of fish to kupuna and those in need through the Hawaii Foodbank and Hawai‘i Seafood Council, we are announcing a new “Fish-to Dish” initiative to help our hurting longline fishing vessels and our very own Honolulu Fish Auction. Aloha from the island of Maui. A month ago, I landed one of my best catches from my jet ski, an ‘ahi that weighed around 150 lbs. That was my biggest catch so far, and I figured that it was just about as good as it gets. But, then I captured this marlin! I think that I consider this marlin better than the ‘ahi because of something that happened to me a year ago while fighting a marlin well over 400 lbs. When the state says, “no fishing,” what does a professional fishing guide do? We do the same as always–fishing reel maintenance–but now we have lots of free time to do it! Taking care of your fishing tackle helps it last longer and perform better and saves you lots of money in the long run. Here are some basic suggestions for the care of your spinning reels. These are things you should do after every fishing trip. All you need is a small Phillips-head and flat-head screwdriver, some rags or paper towels, a few cotton swabs and some light oil. Fishery management is often complex and at times, controversial. It involves multiple stakeholders who often have different perspectives on the use and management of resources. In 2005, the steering committee of Fisheries Local Action Strategy Hawai‘i determined that improving communication amongst scientific, management, and fishing communities could, in turn, benefit the state’s coral reef fishery. This finding spawned the Hawai‘i Fisheries Extension Program to serve as the interface between these different communities. The program’s fisheries extension agent uses various methods to improve collaboration and communication between coral reef fishery stakeholders. In particular, the agent remains active in three primary community groups—providing them with a neutral and trusted entity to liaise with the other groups and helping to inform decision-making processes, project implementation and product development. The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will hold a statewide online public hearing and statewide in-person public hearings on the proposed adoption of a new chapter under the Hawai‘i Administrative Rules (HAR) to establish the Mo‘omomi Community-Based Subsistence Fishing Area (CBSFA) to manage and protect fish stocks and to reaffirm traditional and customary native Hawaiian subsistence fishing practices along the northwest coast of Moloka‘i. The proposed CBSFA extends from Ilio Point in the west to Nihoa Flats in the east, from the shoreline out approximately one mile. The proposed rules would establish new bag limits; size limits; seasonal closures; gear restrictions for uhu, kumu, kole, moi, spiny lobster, opihi, and limu; prohibit night diving and SCUBA spearfishing; prohibit commercial fishing, with exceptions for bottomfishing for Deep Seven bottomfish…

The day started out like most typical spearfishing trips. I got my gear ready the night before and made sure I didn’t forget anything. Two of my friends and I were heading for the reef. We had in mind a half-day of diving and filming some reef spearfishing for another episode of “Kona Spearfishing Adventures.” We planned on spearing some fish to cook up and eat. Well, that was the plan. We pulled up to the gas station, and my uncle pulled up next to me. He had just come in from fishing a net floating about three miles off of Kaiwi Point. DOBOR Audit Dead–For Now H.B. 2422 H.D. 1 is dead. This Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) audit bill would have required “the auditor to conduct a performance and management audit of DLNR’s Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation.” An audit would highlight DOBOR’s elimination of “fishing” from its primary purpose and its efforts to privatize harbors. DLNR Chairperson Suzanne Case doesn’t believe a DOBOR audit is necessary. In testimony against the audit, she cited 12 previous audits from 1976 to 2019. “In addition to the audits listed above,” Suzanne stated, “a financial audit of DOBOR is conducted every year.” DOBOR Administrator Ed Underwood, like Suzanne, claimed on a BLNR hearing transcript that DOBOR had a yearly audit. “Splash!” has asked to…

Mysteries of the Deep Recently I took a trip down south to try my luck at catching something. It had been a while since I’d hooked into something big—other than a shark, of course. I reached out to my buddy True (YouTube channel: “True the Fisherman”). We planned to meet at the launch at around 4 a.m. True was running a little late. From past trips, I knew that the bait turned on for the bite at around 4:30 a.m. If we missed that opportunity, bait would be hard to find. Each summer Hawai‘i’s beaches and shorelines brace themselves for the annual “run” of the baby weke, or, as they are affectionately known in Hawai‘i, ‘oama. Measuring a mere a 4 to 5 inches long, these fingerling weke invade the inner shoreline by the thousands, each of them hoping to uncover little morsels to eat. But be forewarned, ‘oama are not easily caught. It takes a while to develop the “stroke” that lets you lift them up one after another. After the Fourth of July, things start to happen. We already are seeing the “magic” at Magic Island with a fairly good hahalalu run occurring. It is a nice prelude to the heavy action to come at Waimea Bay and elsewhere. There has been quite a bit of interest recently among fishers about the state of our marine resources while popular tourist beaches, typically filled with sunbathers and swimmers, sat empty. Many Hawai‘i residents who were unable to work took to fishing to fill their days and to put food on their tables. Heartwarming stories are being shared about the generosity, kindness and skill of Hawai‘i’s fishing community. Fish are being given to first responders, kupuna and keiki. Ahi Fever Hits the Hilo Trollers The ‘ahi bite has been good, and many boats have been going out during both the day and night. There was plenty of pent-up interest among Hilo Trollers’ captains, so the board decided to hold the July 5th tournament. Everything went smoothly. Social distancing and mask wearing were expected of the check-in crew and weigh-in crew. Many of the observers wore masks, too. Seventeen boats were entered, and nine brought in qualifying flag fish. One marlin, six ‘ahi, five ono, and one mahimahi were weighed. The largest ‘ahi and largest fish overall was a 159.2-lb yellowfin tuna landed by, Capt. Ricky Torres and the crew of the HOLOKAI. We started going on “date-night adventures” several years ago when our youngest, Nohea, now 11 years old, was old enough to stay with my parents overnight. Keeping a Fishery You Didn’t Know Existed Healthy If you’ve ever been in a jewelry shop, you’re bound to notice the glittering gold, emerald and sometimes bright pink or red colors. You are familiar with the gold and jade jewelry, but where do those pink jewelry pieces come from? Deep-water corals, or precious corals as they are known, have been used for jewelry as long as 25,000 years ago in the Mediterranean region. It wasn’t until the 1800s that these corals were discovered in the Pacific Ocean where they were harvested with tangle nets in the Far East, which depleted areas rapidly. In the 1960s, discoveries were made in the Emperor Seamounts, encouraging University of Hawai‘i researchers to look closer to Hawai‘i. They discovered pink coral at 400 meters off…

Bricyn Afong has turned his life into a recipe for success. A retired insurance consultant, he has worked hard all his life to provide for his family. Most recently, Bricyn has used his life experiences to run a unique fine dining “Ocean to Table” experience that eventually led to the creation of his own YouTube channel. Happily married with four children and a six-month-old grandchild, this 37-year-old has accomplished so much. Born and raised on O‘ahu, Bricyn had a pretty tough childhood filled with neglect and dysfunction. At the young age of 15, he welcomed his first child into the world. Aloha kakou. As a female vessel captain and sustainable fisherwoman, I have a lot of love for the sea. My extreme passion is teaching keiki fishing and the importance of caring for the ocean. I also teach gyotaku to kids, and this introduces them to art, biology, and fish. Hopefully that leads our keiki to develop a like, then a love and caring for our precious marine resources. It all starts with them. Supporting community is also a priority. I have joined other commercial fishermen during this crisis with COVID-19, in donating our catches to kupuna, Maui First Responders and the community-at-large.
