What a couple of blessed overnight trips! One was just a quick late night family mission, and I caught both this nice ulua, and an omilu in the morning. On the other trip, Chucky and I pulled into a spot, just as a group of guys were leaving. They said we could have it, as they had been there for three days and had not picked up even one strike. State Parks Opening The Division of State Parks has been reopening parks across the state. All openings are subject to COVID-19 guidelines and county emergency orders. State park camping and lodging areas are not quarantine locations. “We are pleased that Hawai‘i has been so successful in flattening the COVID-19 curve, which allows us to reopen more park areas — particularly some overnight opportunities, which lets families further enjoy Hawai‘i’s outdoors,” said State Parks Administrator Curt Cottrell. Kaua‘i: All parks are open. Camping and shelters in Koke‘e State Park are available. Statewide camping reservations are limited to a 30-day advance booking, and groups must be from the same household. Other Kaua‘i camping areas were anticipated to open on June 16. I have fished for a 100-plus-lb ulua for nine years. During that time, I have gotten very close to this ultimate catch. I lost one last October. I brought the fish all the way to gaff and saw that the line was wrapped around its tail. When I slid the gaff down, it was very hard to get good gaff placement because the gaff hit only the tail. After I tried a few times, the hook popped out and my wife, Carrie, and I watched the ulua swim away. The word spread quickly that Lake Wilson was open again! The bass club held a tournament, and the parking lot at the Wahiawa State Freshwater Fishing Park was packed with boat trailers. Anglers who were not fishing in the tournament were on the lake, as well. There were people fishing from shore in the park, and everyone seemed happy to be out in the sunshine. Everyone I spoke with was grateful to be back on the water. Catching a fish was a happy bonus. This was the first time that Glenn Yoshida and I had been on the lake this year. I grew up fishing on and off the shorelines of Maui. To keep it interesting, I fish different styles including ulua fishing from shore and trolling from a boat or jet ski. I started jet-ski fishing when I was a rescue driver out at “Jaws”/Pe‘ahi. Although fishing off my ski is a lot cheaper than boat fishing and doesn’t take as much preparation, it is very challenging. I share this story because it might save a life and spare loved ones from sadness and grief. News of diving accidents and drowning deaths always give me flashbacks. In 1988, my younger brother Michael was diving with his friend in Haiku. They got separated from each other; and, by the time they found my brother, it was too late. Diving in 20 feet of water, he experienced Shallow-Water Blackout (SWBO), a common cause of drowning. I still remember that day as if it were yesterday. The fishery for uku (Aprion virescens) is sustainable and very healthy, according to the new stock assessment released by the NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) at the June 2020 meeting of the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council’s Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC). The lead assessment author, Dr. Marc Nadon, said that the 2018 spawning stock was estimated to be 1.8 million pounds, which is two and three-fourths times the calculated sustainable threshold of 663,705 lbs. This means that in 2018, the fishery harvested uku at 57 percent of the sustainable harvest rate. The fishery is so healthy that in the time span of 70 years (1948 to 2018) there have only been two years that the fishery was at risk of overfishing, which happened in 1988 and…

Deer hunters can now apply to hunt as the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) announced the opening of the black-tailed deer hunting season on the island of Kaua‘i. Rules and conditions regulating game mammal hunting in Title 13, Chapter 123 will be in effect. Unit L (Waimea Heights Hunting Area): Unit L will be open to archery and muzzle-load hunting of black-tailed deer and feral pig. Maps showing the hunting area boundaries and hunter checking stations are available in the Lihu‘e DOFAW Office and West Kaua‘i hunter checking stations and can be downloaded online. Fish take many forms, but have you ever seen a dressed one? I don’t mean one with a dressing, I mean a dressed one. How about a pan dressed or butterfly filleted fish? Here are some definitions of the various ways fish can be cut for cooking. Fish Preparation — Types of Cuts Dressed The fish has been cleaned, scaled and gutted, and, sometimes, the side fins have been removed. Pan Dressed More of the fish is removed for this version. It is gutted and scaled, and the head, tail and all fins have been removed. Chunks The fish is pan dressed and then cut across the body into wide pieces. We all have experienced wonderful days fishing as well as not-sowonderful days fishing. What role does our attitude play in determining a good day or bad day? The NALU KEA is the last of Hawai‘i’s haole sampans. She was built in 1988 for the sheer enjoyment of sportfishing all of Hawai‘i’s waters. She is sturdy, excellent in rough conditions and extremely comfortable while still very efficient and safe. We love taking the NALU KEA to South Point, even if the weather is problematic. Hilo Trollers After much discussion with captains, the Trollers board decided in the 3rd week of June to run the July Tournament scheduled for Sunday July 5th weather permitting. Captains have been consulted and procedures for maintaining safety and social distancing at check-in and weigh-in are being reviewed and developed. Captains will be asked to hang their own fish on the scales and there will be a skeleton check-in and weigh-in crew. Many boats are trolling, and we have had a bit of Ahi fever, so there is strong sentiment that we should run. Safety will come first. I’d like to share the story of a fish that I caught on May 15, 2019. That was more than a year ago, but I didn’t think of sending the story in to HFN at the time. I caught the 34.5-lb shibi (according to a scale that I have at home) on my favorite whipping setup: a Major Craft SPX PE1 MH rod; a Shimano twin power XD 4000 reel spooled with 20-lb test J-Braid and 20-lb test J-Line leader; and a Daiwa SP Minnow Lure.
