■ I’ve been a fisherman all my life. I began ulua fishing in 2007. That’s when I started to get serious about catching a “trophy fish,” the one we all hear stories about, a giant trevally. Ever since then, I’ve been going from spot to spot, trying every secret bait and every “Uncle’s” trick in the book. In good weather and bad weather, I was in full-on hunting mode. You probably know how it is. In more than 10 years, I caught thousands of pounds of fish and everything else, but no ulua. I caught sharks, eels, stingrays, turtles, fugu, O‘ahu and all kinds of ‘opala–you name it. I caught my share of good fish, too, but not the one I was looking for.
