  Ala Wai Boaters Picket On October 4, boaters began a month-long weekly picket of the Ala Wai Harbor’s Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) harbormaster office. They are striking against DOBOR’s new mooring fee increases and its strategic goal to privatize harbors statewide, eliminating the middle-income kama‘aina boating community. “My only comment here is sadness, especially for the traditional Hawaiian sailing canoes. Let’s be careful not to alienate local people and cultural traditions. The Ala Wai could easily turn into a harbor like Fort Lauderdale, Florida: a place for rich people with boats they visit a couple of times a year,” said Kate Thompson, boating fee strike organizer. The island of Hawai‘i holds sufficient populations of Rio Grande wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia) to support both a fall and spring hunting season. The fall hunt coincides with the general upland game-bird season, November through January, when birds of either sex may be harvested. During the spring season, which occurs during the month of March and the first half of April, only bearded toms may be taken. Connecting with people who grow their own food, hunt, and fish is a big part of my life on Lana‘i, and many of these people have become a part of my ‘ohana. Before arriving in the islands, I’d heard about aloha and ‘ohana. On Lana‘i, there is another level to it. Ala Wai Canal Dredging and Improvements Begin The dredging of the Ala Wai Canal to remove accumulated silt and sediments, remove abandoned Hawaiian Electric Company cables, and to repair two sections of canal wall began last month. Extensive public outreach was conducted by the DLNR Engineering Division to inform canal users, like canoe clubs, of the work. Dredging is expected to remove 186,000 cubic yards of material from depths ranging between six and twelve feet. The dredged material is suitable for ocean disposal at an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved site – the South O‘ahu Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site. The walls being repaired include the Mauka side fronting the Ala Wai Community Park and between the Kalakaua Avenue and McCully Street bridges. DLNR last dredged the canal in 2002.…

Simple Ways To Reduce Plastic Waste and Pollution When Boating Each year, an estimated 18 billion lbs of plastic are dumped into our oceans from coastal regions. According to a study by the World Economic Forum, at the current rate of pollution, there will be more plastics than fish, by weight, in the ocean by 2050. A prior series of articles described my near half-century of experiences hunting upland game birds with German wirehaired pointers. They are certainly not the most common breed in the field, and you would be hard pressed to come upon many in Hawai‘i. The question, “What kind of dog is that?” follows me wherever I go.
