Top Water Lures Before 1980 Back in the 50s when I was fishing the oyster bars off Sarasota, Florida, the lure of choice for jack trevally and snook (rabalo) was the Zara Spook. The wooden Spook was a top water swimming lure that could “walk the dog.” That is, it could be made to dart back and forth across the line of retrieve. When I came to Hawai i in 1965 I brought a half dozen Zara Spooks with me. In Yap, Micronesia, I lost all the lures I had on two weekends. DOBOR Buys Tires for Employee In a Resolution of Charge, the Hawai‘i State Ethics Commission fined Kaua‘i Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR-Kaua‘i) maintenance worker Bruce Kelekoma $4,500 for taking state property, including truck tires, for personal benefit. “The Commission investigated Respondent Kelekoma’s actions and believes that Respondent Kelekoma likely violated the Fair Treatment Law by using state time, equipment, supplies and personnel for his personal benefit and/ or the benefit of other individuals or private businesses,” the commission wrote. The state allegedly spent $2,753.89 in automobile parts and repair services from Kauai Auto Repair LLC for Bruce’s benefit. This included new tires and an alignment. DOBOR procurement documents claimed the purchases were for a DOBOR-Kaua‘i 2012 Ford F-350 truck with license plate E-621. Oddly, DOBOR purchased new tires…

When we were young, we were all taught never to turn our backs on the ocean, no matter how calm the water looked. Lately I’ve been hearing about lawai‘a (fishermen) getting swept off the rocks into the ocean and their fates not being lucky, so I figured I’d tell my story. It all started on a late afternoon when I went holoholo by myself, which I rarely do. I headed down to OTEC where I saw one of my “honey holes” empty. I had the whole coastline to myself. The START ME UP TOO brought in a 503.8-lb blue marlin captured by anglers Charles Baldwin and Bill Duffey. They were fishing with captains Johnny Burke and John Verfurth. Johnny was coming back in from fishing the outside shoal off Kaho‘olawe when they raised the fish inside the LA-buoy marks located off Olowalu. John was just getting ready to switch out the lures when Johnny heard him yelling. The marlin had come up between the short-’rigger and the short-corner lures with its dorsal fin cutting through the surface. As Johnny turned around, he saw the marlin right behind the short-corner lure with its mouth wide open and bill out of the water as it tried to eat the lure. It missed the lure on its first attempt. Mahalo to everyone who showed up for and participated in the 2019 OCC (Outrigger Canoe Club) Fishing Tournament. We ended up with 36 anglers and lots of fishing tales! Winning the human-powered division was Bryan Tepper with a 2.8-lb ‘aha (needlefish). Bryan was the only angler in the Human Power Category to land a fish, although there were several other bites and a few close calls. I know that I personally had six bites, so the fish were hungry! In the motor division, eight motorboats were out on the ocean and almost every team managed to land a few mahimahi, ono, shibi, or kawakawa. Change Your Luck with Some Patience and a Friend Before I landed these two fish, I hadn’t caught anything weighing more than 5 lbs since November of last year. Then I caught two fish within three days of each other. The first fish was a small ulua weighing 22.5 lbs. I caught it while whipping solo with a new Zenaq Duro 96HHH rod from Japan, which I hadn’t caught a fish with yet. The lure was a JBOMB made by Krazy Lures in Hawai‘i. The Molokai Whippas hosted their 42nd Annual Invitational Tournament on April 26, 2019. Over 85 anglers entered in the tournament and encountered calm winds and balmy conditions that day. Following a great dinner provided by Mike’s Catering, the program opened with the announcement of the 2019 scholarship recipients. Every year, the tournament generates funds for scholarships that are awarded to graduating seniors. Three $1,000 scholarships were awarded. The recipients are: Kaytlin Naeole, daughter of Francis and Michelle Naeole. Kaytlin is headed for Southern Oregon University to major in Nursing and specializing in Midwifery (Obstetrics and Gynocology). Cameryn Rae Kahalewai, daughter of Sol and Rhonda Kahalewai.
