Across the state, informational meetings were held on the 2016 fishing license report: “Feasibility of a Non-Commercial Fishing Registry, Permit or License System in Hawai‘i.” Fishermen got to learn about potential license options, and the DLNR got to see if there is fishermen interest in the introduction of a fish license bill in the 2019 Legislature.
Dr. Bruce Anderson, DLNR, Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) administrator, was correct when he wrote in a release, “Undoubtedly, this report will generate considerable discussion and serve as a valuable reference for all those interested in this issue.” Conservation International, Hawai‘i and the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council commissioned the report, which analyzed “a registry, permit or license (RPL) system for the state” over 18 months.
