The bushfires that blazed this summer changed the way we talk about climate change in Australia. By now, we’re sadly familiar with the weight of the catastrophe: more than 18 million hectares of our beautiful country were burnt, 33 people lost their lives and an estimated one billion animals were wiped out, with some species now feared extinct. But for the first time, it seemed the climate crisis, and the political mechanisms that have exacerbated it, was the topic of conversation not only at every dinner table and in every workplace, but also in our social media feeds and, perhaps most importantly, in our art.
