LIKE MANY WHO SAW IT, I was surprised to see “6mm GT” pop up on the new cartridge list from the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI) on January 28, 2022. The other two new rounds were the 6.8 True Velocity Composite (TVC) and the .338 Weatherby Rebated Precision Magnum (RPM). Loaded ammunition is still scarce, but I believe that the diminutive 6mm cartridge will prove significant for precision rifle shooters. If that was the naming convention, the polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol would have been designated the “P94.” Horst Wesp started working on the P99 four months after being hired as the technical leader. Wesp was a well-known firearm engineer who started work at Steyr in 1958 at the age of 17. He was named co-owner of several patents and, in 1963, placed in charge of firearm development at Steyr. By the late 13th century, black-powder was well established as a propellant for firing projectiles from various types of tubes. THE YEAR 2022 was great for the Second Amendment, thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Bruen v. NYSRPA. However, 2023 hasn’t started out as well. It began in the heartland. The outgoing Illinois legislature quickly passed a comprehensive gun-control bill that was signed by Governor J.B. Pritzker on January 10. The “Protect Illinois Communities Act” banned the manufacture, sale and possession of most semiautomatic firearms and accessories in the state, exempting Springfield Armory and Rock River Arms for manufacturing and sales to customers outside of Illinois, as well active and retired law enforcement. Representatives of Springfield Armory and Rock River Arms indicated that they were not contacted about the exemption by lawmakers, so I believe that this was a preemptive measure to avoid their legal challenges once…
