L.C. SMITH IDEAL GRADE SHOTGUN A high condition L.C. Smith Ideal Grade .410 shotgun in its original shipping box realized a comfortable $13,500, including premiums, at the November 18, 2021, Morphy Auctions sale. Made by Hunter Arms Company of Fulton, New York, in 1931, this lovely side-by-side features a London steel barrel with a matted high rib sight plane and bead front sight and ejectors. It is one of 232 Ideal Grades made in .410. In superb fettle, the gun has a case-hardened featherweight frame, Ideal Grade engraving, double triggers and automatic safety. The pistol-grip walnut stock has a hard rubber buttplate and grip cap. Condition of the double is 95-plus percent. It comes in a two-piece box that was likely original to the piece. SOME MAY REMEMBER the Colt Black Powder Arms Company. In 1993, Anthony Imperato took out a home-equity loan, leased a small factory space, acquired the necessary machinery and hired a few employees. In Brooklyn, New York, they assembled and sold 19th-century-style Colt revolvers and muskets under license from Colt’s Manufacturing. Then, in 1996, with the help of his father Louis Imperato, they developed a rimfire lever-action rifle. The first Henry Repeating Arms Model H001 in .22 LR was shipped during March 1997. The lineup quickly expanded to include centerfire designs with the H006 Big Boy in 2003. Henry’s firearms are now produced at three factories, one in New Jersey and two in Wisconsin. As much as I’d like to claim they come from my head, this is not the case. A good, rounded reference library is essential to putting this column together. ON FEBRUARY 15, 2022, it was announced that the lawsuit filed against Remington Outdoor Company (ROC) by the families of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting victims was settled out of court for $73 million. In the wake of the 2012 tragedy, the Connecticut law firm of Koskoff, Koskoff & Bieder convinced grieving families to allow them to sue on their behalf. ROC produced the Bushmaster XM15-E2S rifle that the 20-year-old murderer stole from his mother after killing her in her bed. The settlement was a payday for the firm representing the families, but it does nothing to prevent future tragedies. THE OCTOBER 2021 ISSUE of Guns & Ammo introduced the Slovakia-based holster manufacturer Falco and reviewed the Timeless IWB. The article described the company’s beginnings, the brand’s “one-person, one-holster” philosophy to manufacturing, and its two product lines: Made-from-scratch custom Premium holsters and the Timeless series. The Timeless lineup has fewer options, but the company’s proposition meant that it could produce and deliver a holster within four weeks — guaranteed. (Consider that these holsters are imported.) IN MOST MODERN VENTURES, technology and performance are closely related. That statement certainly applies to the shooting-sports industry. During the last 30 years, there has been a persistant push to improve products and provide the consumer with the best performance possible. The availability of monolithic, i.e., “solid,” copper bullets is now prevalent. Randy Brooks, the retired former owner and CEO of Barnes Bullets (barnesbullets. com), was the catalyst for the American hunter’s current demand for monolithic bullets. Brooks bought Barnes Bullets in the mid-1980s, and he turned a failing company into a mainstay.
