The first cover to feature ammunition highlighted a cover story written by Col. Townsend Whelen. In “Load Your Own,” Whelen explained the fundamentals of reloading step-by-step. The article was illustrated with many detailed photographs at his bench where Whelen revealed that he started reloading in 1899 using an Ideal No. 3 tong tool. A beautiful and rare small-bore Charles Lancaster, hammerless, four-barreled shotgun sold at the March 21, 2018, James D. Julia auction for an impressive $35,300, including premiums. The 20-gauge gun with 2¾-inch chambers features an action that looks like a boxlock but actually employs a trigger-plate-type action with a rotating internal hammer. The barrels retain 90 percent of their traditional rebrowned finish with the action having a smooth gray-to-brown patina. Lancaster is known for two- and four-barreled pistols but also manufactured rifles and shotguns, both of which are exceedingly scarce. WHEN JASON HORNADY was hired by his father, Steve, in 2006, he was given several goals to accomplish. There were programs that had to change and an export business to fix, which were all tasks completed several years ago. The most challenging objective given to Jason was to win an FBI contract. WE’RE ALL FAMILIAR with range debates centered around barrel life. It’s a metric often used to argue the superiority of one cartridge over another. “That’s a barrel burner” is one accusation sure to diminish enthusiasm for any of the flat-shooting cartridges.
