Lion conservation efforts in the Indian state of Gujarat have been so successful that a new sanctuary will be opened to house the abundant numbers of big cats. Gir national park is home to the world’s only Asiatic lion population and the only place outside Africa where a lion can be seen in its natural habitat. The number of the endangered animals has risen so high – with about 400 in Gir and 300 in other parts of the state – that Gir has been overcrowded for years. Lack of space has forced lions to stray into villages and coastal areas. A Mediterranean diet of nuts, seafood, grains and vegetables could lower the risk of dementia by almost a quarter, according to new research. The data suggests eating plant-based foods may have a “protective effect” against dementia, regardless of genetic risk, which researchers said could form the basis for future public health strategies if confirmed. Joint lead author of the study Dr Janice Ranson, a senior research fellow at the University of Exeter, said: “This is likely to be a beneficial lifestyle choice for people looking to make healthy dietary choices and reduce their risk of dementia.” The findings, in the journal BMC Medicine, are based on data from more than 60,000 individuals from the UK Biobank, an online database of medical and lifestyle records. ASTRONOMY Space telescope captures rare image of dying star The James Webb space telescope has captured the rare and fleeting phase of a star on the cusp of death. The observation was among the first made by the telescope following its launch in late 2021, but the picture was only released last week. It shows the gas and dust flung into space by the star 15,000 light years away. Shimmering in purple, the castoff material once comprised the star’s outer layer. The Hubble space telescope snapped a shot of the same star a few decades ago, but without the delicate details. “We’ve never seen it like that before.
