Bacterial canker
Sunken, flat, discoloured areas of bark appear, followed by oozing resin. Tree buds remain closed, leaves are small and yellow and may have holes.
The cause Bacteria enters trees through wounds, often caused by pruning, but sometimes as a result of pests. Tends to occur in a wet autumn or spring.
Crops affected Apples, cherries, pears, plums and other tree fruit.
The cure Remove infected areas, using secateurs or a pruning saw in summer. Safely dispose of infected material, and never add it to the compost heap.
Brown rot
Fruits turn brown before being covered in raised white-ish pustules.
The cause Fungal spores enter the fruit through wounds, caused by rough handling when pruning or doing maintenance, or damage by birds and insects.
