One of the most delicious crops of early spring is asparagus. Harvest it daily, as the spears quickly become woody. As soils warm and frost recedes, it’s safe to plant summer crops. Direct-sow seeds or plant out seedlings of chilli, capsicum, tomato, eggplant, cucumber, pumpkin, squash, zucchini and beans. Also plant lettuce and herbs, including basil, parsley and coriander. In areas that are still cold and where frosts are likely, hold off planting warm-season crops. Instead, sow a crop of broad beans, broccoli, English spinach and rocket. As well, potatoes, beetroot and carrots can be planted now in all areas. When planting potatoes, use certified disease-free seed potatoes (tubers).
