I’m sitting at my desk in the middle of a busy office but my thoughts are a million miles away. I’m reflecting on the news that a lovely person I know has suddenly and tragically passed away. As always happens at such times, the world seems to stop and stand perfectly still even as you can see and hear it moving at pace around you. This is the third person I know to have died this year, and amid the feelings of grief it’s made me think a lot about what constitutes a good life. IN FOR THE LONG HAUL People who improve their diets over the long-term may significantly reduce their risk of premature death. The study, which will be published in the New England Journal of Medicine, followed nearly 74,000 adults and scored their diets over 12 years, from 1986-1998, and then their risk of dying over the next 12 years, from 1998-2010. The findings showed that improved diet quality over the first 12-year period was associated with reduced risk of death over the following 12 years.
