THINK / PLAY / LIVE: THE ENLIGHTENED GAME Lessons THERE ARE A LOT of things that need to happen at impact for the ball to come off the clubface pure, straight and with tons of speed. One of them is getting your swing arc to reach its low point slightly ahead of the ball. This is the secret to Tour-level contact and that feeling of Yeah, I caught that one good! THINK / PLAY / LIVE YOU'VE MISSED THE GREEN, finding some deep rough just off the putting surface. This is not the time to lean on your run-of-the-mill chipping method. Dealing with rough on short shots isn't always easy, especially if there's grain involved, whether it's with you or against you. Here's the smart play. First off, you need to position the ball farther back in your stance. If you're like most players, you set the ball in the middle. On chips from rough, place it just in front of your back foot. HITTING A HIGH, SPINNING BUNKER SHOT can be difficult for the recreational golfer. Most players who I see struggle in sand never get in a proper setup position. Try opening the clubface to where it's laying like a pancake flat on the sand. Next, stand farther away from the ball than you think you should and squat down, getting your hands low. This address gives you the best chance at hitting a high, soft bunker shot. The “spinny” part has other factors—size of the sand granules, depth of sand, how fast you can swing and how close to the ball you hit—but if you nail the address, you've done your part. LESSONS: JULY-AUGUST 2024 YOU SLICE. Even if you call it a “push-cut,” it's not optimal. The goal: Iron shots that fly off the clubface in the exact direction you want the ball to go. What I've noticed over the years is that most struggling iron players are overly concerned with body turn. Body turn is important but not when it comes at the expense of getting your hands and arms involved. Ignoring these body parts almost always results in holding on too long after impact. Great iron players release their hands and the club post-impact with authority. To learn how they do it, grab any iron and set up to the ball with your feet close together (1).
