The loofah (Luffa cylindrica or Luffa aegyptiaca), also known as luffa, rag gourd, sponge gourd or vegetable gourd, is not your typical garden vegetable. Native to South and Southeast Asia, this annual and very rigorous tropical and subtropical climbing vine is a member of the cucumber family. Known primarily for its fruit’s fibrous tissue, when dried, the loofah becomes the perfect sponge.
