In the gumtree-lined suburbs of Sydney’s North Shore, Spotted Gum House is a unique bungalow mixing traditional and modern design with sustainable heritage conservation. The restrained, mid-century-inspired kitchen perfectly blends a monochromatic palette with environmentally conscious materials for a simple and natural look. The team at Alexander and Co. was limited in the renovation due to heritage conservation requirements, but rose to the challenge of complementing the home’s existing structure with the client’s environmental considerations. The kitchen addition was built in the shadow of the home’s street-facing facade and features low-VOC materials with stained oak and pine in a double-height space that’s bathed in light. Part of a larger renovation that exudes simple, stripped-back Scandi aesthetics with subtle Hamptons-style influences, this kitchen is finished in cool neutral tones and natural, earthy materials. Mid-century styling is classic for a reason, with walnut wood details defining this family kitchen by Rabbitte Joinery. Originally designed by architect Michael Geor in the 1980s, this brick home houses a growing family of five, with practical use of space becoming the family’s main priority. The old kitchen had an awkward placement, with its main walkway leading to the bedrooms and bathrooms, resulting in a cramped feeling during busy mealtimes. With respect to the original architecture, the clients wanted a complete redesign of the kitchen and living area for a better flow while preserving the home’s 1980s structure. Contrary to popular belief and the accepted wisdom of interior design, this kitchen shows matt black can be open, elevated and inviting instead of dark, dingy and lifeless. The brief given to designer Nicola Ross of Nicola Ross Design was for a minimalist black kitchen that worked well with the restrained soft grey and wood palette throughout the rest of the home. Bathed in natural light, this coastal sanctuary is an all-white affair featuring oak wood beams and open shelving that complements the light colour palette. The design philosophy is deceptively simple, initially presenting as a classic white kitchen when in fact it’s a nuanced mix of reconstituted stone, slatted wood and natural marble. The floating island bench separates the kitchen area from the living zone while, at the same time, the beautiful whitewashed flooring ties the rooms together. Designed by Katie Scott of Sticks+Stones Design in Auckland, the brief for this new kitchen called for a simple, fuss-free design with a sculptural element that harmonised with the contemporary new home and the owners’ love of mid-century furniture and Arts and Crafts pottery. A collaboration between the celebrated architecture firm Atelier Pierre Thibault and premium hardwood manufacturer Kastella, this kitchen celebrates its lakeside location with wall-to-ceiling windows and walnut timber panelling. Function and luxury are the defining words of this carefully designed bathroom by architecture firm Eterno Design. A multi-award winner of the National Kitchen & Bathroom Association’s Excellence in Design Award, Eterno takes pride in functionality and attention to detail and this elegant ensuite is no different. The design brief was simple — spacious and functional amenities with a luxurious vibe — but there were a few roadblocks to completing this dream bathroom renovation.
