Modernist makeover
Plant, Basingstoke, a landmark of British Modernism that integrates tiered roof gardens and terraces alongside new commercial workspaces, has been given a new lease of life by a group of landscape architects and architects, including Grant Associates, Studio Knight Stokoe and Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios. Originally known as Gateway House, and later Mountbatten House, the building was designed in 1973 by Peter Foggo and Arup Associates Group 2 with a dramatic series of terraces by garden designer James Russell that earned it the moniker of the ‘Hanging Gardens of Basingstoke’.
Over time, the building and gardens fell into disrepair, but both were given listed status in 2015, and now the complex has been revitalised inside and out, with more than 22,500 new plants and 86 new trees, including…
