Nestling into the fields in a tiny hamlet in Cambridgeshire, Shirley and Paul Shadford’s thatched cottage is perfectly framed by a series of rose arches, which appear to rise from borders spilling over with flowers. There are soft hummocks of hardy geraniums, spherical alliums on slender stems, shaggy-topped perennial cornflowers, spires of valerian, elegant irises and ramrod-straight delphiniums.
At the back of the 17th century house, another generous plot contains a 5m-wide pond, overlooked by a small arbour, with a neat lawn, more generously filled borders…
