A lthough relatively new to South African supermarket shelves, adzuki (meaning small bean in Japanese) are very popular in East Asian cuisine, where they are second to soya beans. The little red beans have a strong, nutty, sweet flavour and are traditionally cooked with sugar and mashed into a sweet red bean paste used as a filling in Asian desserts like moon cakes, glutinous rice balls, mochi and ice cream.
