THE POLLINATORS
The all-important pollinator group consists of butterflies, beetles and a variety of bees. We can thank bees for pollinating at least a third of our food plants.
THE PREDATORS
These are your assassin bugs, damselflies, centipedes, daddy long legs, dragonflies, ground beetles, hoverflies, green lacewings, ladybirds, praying mantises, spiders and wasps. The predators feast on the unwanted pests in our gardens – aphids, whiteflies, snail eggs, adult slugs and caterpillars.
THE PARASITES
Parasites include tachinid flies, beneficial nematodes (worms) and parasitoid wasps. Tiny parasitic wasps inject their eggs into a host’s body (most often a troublesome caterpillar). When a larva hatches out, the caterpillar becomes its food. This is the type of “insecticide” we want in our gardens.
