Beginning in 2014, TC anglers began registering an oddly high number of mammoth bass in Kingsley Lake, 47 miles west of St. Augustine. Catches included hundreds of 8-pound-plus bass, but also 15 over 13 pounds, and several over 15 pounds, making this relatively small lake, 2,000 acres, a real standout among Florida’s waters. Perfectly round Kingsley, which evolved from a giant sinkhole, is also exceptionally deep for a Florida lake, with areas ranging from 40 to 80 feet.
By following 10 fish with depth and temperature tags, FWC biologists learned that big females spent a lot of time in Kingsley’s deeper, colder water during oppressive summer heat, optimizing their health, size and longevity.
