By far the largest of the ray and skate family, the manta, Mobula birostris, occupies a position of near-mythical status among Florida anglers in the know. Where other rays are noted, tolerated, often forgotten, it’s the manta that gets fishermen most excited, for the manta—like some kind of living, mobile reef—is frequently escorted by prized cobia.
