Cynoscion nebulosus
Often referred to as speckled trout, speck, or—commonly—just “trout.” The state and world record of 17 pounds, 7 ounces, caught in Fort Pierce, may well be the Holy Grail of inshore anglers. Large snook and red drum are no longer easily, lawfully weighed for documentation, due to maximum size limits. One “trophy” class seatrout, however, keeps the door open for a future record.
Why chase ’em? Abundant and delicious, for one thing. Trout are staple in the classic “fish fry.” Also, seatrout provide an exciting spectacle when they chase surface lures or flies. All sizes are likely to leap when hooked. Large ones, over 4 pounds or so, make strong runs. Prospect of an 18-pounder always looming.
