October, or Red October as it is known throughout the 10,000 Islands region, is synonymous with schooling redfish. As the fall air and water temperatures begin to cool, a migration of copper colored drum will start bunching up. Throughout the month, be prepared for the redfish to position themselves on hard bottom on the outside points of the countless outer islands, bites and sounds of the region. Hard bottom can best be described in our area as sand, shoals, oyster bars or combinations of these. Traditional hot spots within the region are plentiful, but notable areas that produce year after year are Cape Romano, Whitehorse Key, Gomez Point, Round Key, Camp Lulu and Highland Point area to name a few.
