Gulf of Mexico recreational red snapper fishing is expected to resume in Florida state waters this month. Last summer in Gulf state waters (shoreline to nine nautical miles offshore), recreational anglers partook in a 78-day season, and this year it'll be the same.
The FWC has accepted staff recommendations for the upcoming red snapper season:
• Open weekends starting on Saturday, May 6
• Open continuously from Saturday, May 27, to
Sunday, July 2
• Open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in September and October, plus Labor Day on September 4
Meanwhile, the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council, which oversees Gulf waters outside Florida's purview, is considering a controversial allocation-based management of charter-boats and headboats.
