The super-slim Antonio Carraro Mach 2 compact track tractor has arrived in Australia and was on display at the recent Elmore & District Machinery Field Days in Victoria. The company has only just recently started manufacturing compact track tractors, with a focus on minimising soil compaction, a good power-to-weight ratio, and maximum stability and traction on steep hills. Its new AC track technology is designed for better oxygenation of the soil than is possible with wheels. Furthermore, tracks also generally perform much better on steep hills or in wet conditions when carrying heavy implements. Exporters who continue to exploit high prices could cause a downturn in the industry further down the track, a new report from ANZ has found. The report, titled Cattle Call, recommends beef producers begin rebuilding herd numbers to meet growing international demand for beef, as drought conditions and current demand see herd numbers fall. The current cattle herd size in Australia is at a two-decade low of 23.3 million, the report finds. ANZ says a $7 billion growth in the industry is possible by 2025 if cattle numbers can be increased quickly. ANZ’s head of agribusiness Mark Bennett says the long-term gain should be worth the short-term change. “Australia’s beef industry finds itself at a critical crossroad that requires a call for serious consideration of some opportunity cost,” he says.…

West Australian freight company Esperance Freight Lines has re-equipped its Perth depot with six 2.5-tonne payload Toyota 8FG25 combustion counterbalanced forklifts and a Toyota 8FBN25 battery-electric forklift. Toyota Material Handling Australia says this order means Esperance Freight Lines has bought 22 Toyota forklifts in the last three years for its depots in Esperance, Geraldton and Kalgoorlie. Previous orders included 2.5-tonne and 3-tonne payload internal combustion trucks, and an 8FBN25 battery-electric forklift. Anew system from Claas allows tractor operators to make precise turns at headlands with automatic guidance. The system, called Claas ‘Turn In’, calculates the optimal path for the next approach and completes the turn automatically. Claas Harvest Centre precision farming product manager Travis Ryan-Salter says the Turn In system makes it easy for drivers when there is no point of reference to follow. “Without fixed reference points, it is often difficult to line up with the next track at headlands,” Ryan-Salter says. “Starting at an angle of 90 degrees to the track, Turn In identifies the optimum path to follow based on the machine’s speed, steering lock and alignment. “The system then guides the machine onto the next track automatically using a predefined path to achieve the desired turn. The Mahindra mForce 100P tractor, which is designed to be more powerful and efficient than previous Mahindra compact tractor models, is now available in Australia. Its Perkins 100hp engine combines with a 32x32 powershift transmission to give the mFORCE a maximum speed of 40km/h and, according to Mahindra, the power and speed to cope with any terrain. But new markets and incentives could make storing carbon or producing energy from land more profitable than farming, and turn our agricultural land into a carbon sink. With the frame being manufactured from 10mm and 12mm steel, the implements are both structurally sound and heavy enough to enter hard ground at a respectable depth. Corn growers who use John Deere 6 and 7 S-Series combine harvesters can now use a foldable, eight-row corn head to harvest their crops, following the introduction of the new John Deere 608FC corn head. The 608FC corn head is slim enough to allow the combine it is mounted on to travel along narrow roads, and eliminates the need for the harvester operator to take off and reattach corn heads when moving from field to field. Cancer Council Australia is calling for greater awareness following new estimates showing around 130 Australian workers are diagnosed with lung cancer each year as a result of work-based exposure to diesel fumes. Most at risk are those who work with heavy machinery, including any regular work with diesel-fuelled vehicles such as tractors, excavators, forklifts and buses. As part of National Safe Work month in October, the Cancer Council is releasing a series of free resources outlining workplace cancer risks that exist for employers and employees. The World Health Organisation recently upgraded its classification of diesel fumes to a ‘Group 1’ carcinogen, meaning it is an established and proven cause of cancer in humans. The Cancer Council says that, despite this, awareness of the hazards of diesel fumes is relatively low.…

Yanmar has expanded its YH series of diesel-powered commercial and industrial generators with the addition of five new single-phase models, ideal for applications in the construction, mining, farming and manufacturing industries. Up until now, the YH series has been exclusively made up of three-phase models, but Yanmar local distributor Power Equipment says it recognised an increasing demand for single-phase generators. “The market has been telling us there’s a need for a quality single-phase Yanmar option, and that demand can now be filled,” Power Equipment business manager Noel Heritage says. The units are designed as a standby power source for any number of commercial situations, or as the prime power source for remote off-grid work such as construction, mining or farming. Since we put together the last ATV buyers’ guide, things got complicated. As if there weren’t enough models to choose from, now there are more. There are 2x4, 4x4 and 6x6 models. There are diesel and petrol engines from 24 to 100hp. There are one-, two-, three-, four-, five- and six-seater models across the ATV and UTV ranges. There’s more of everything, although a few brands – like Arctic Cat – have come and gone. All in all, sales are up and everyone’s happy. If you’re unfortunate enough to be hit by bushfires, the next steps after the immediate fire recovery period are to manage surviving stock, return burnt pastures to productivity, and replace fencing and water infrastructure. Peak industry body Meat and Livestock Australia has published some thoughts from Daniel Schuppan, who was heavily involved with fire-affected producers in South Australia’s lower north, where 80,000 hectares were burnt in November 2015. Schuppan is also an animal production specialist with Landmark, based at Jamestown, SA, a lifetime ewe management course deliverer and part of the Mid North Young Guns networking and development group.
