John Deere’s new MaxEmerge 5e variable-rate electric drive row units have been designed to improve planting accuracy and reduce the need for maintenance, and are now available in Australia. Aimed mostly at helping corn and soybean growers improve planting accuracy, reliability and uptime during sowing, the row units have an electric drive meter that allows each unit to work independently. Claas has bought the intellectual and marketing rights for the Shredlage maize silage process, which is designed to improve the availability and digestibility of starch and fibre. The German company acquired the international distribution rights for the technology last year for use in its Jaguar forage harvesters. The process was developed over the past decade by two American dairy nutritionists, Roger Olsen and Ross Dale, who were looking for a more efficient silage process suitable for high-ratio forage diets. “The process intensively processes both the kernel and ‘long chop’ stalk using two specially-designed Loren Cut rollers that fit into the Multi Crop Cracker (MCC-L) processor found in Claas Jaguar forage harvesters,” Claas says. “Claas V-Max V20 and V-Classic V24 chopping cylinders are used to produce a chop length of 26mm…

The New Holland NHDrive concept autonomous tractor is a driverless machine that can perform a wide range of farming tasks. Shown recently at the Farm Progress Show in Iowa, US, the tractor is fully autonomous and can be monitored and controlled via desktop computer or a portable tablet. The NHDrive can make full use of the periods of favourable weather for farming operations by working day and night. Unlike the cab-less Case IH driverless concept vehicle (above), which was shown at the same event, the New Holland is equipped with a cab that is completely identical to that of a standard New Holland T8. The sun came out to greet more than 450 farmers who gathered at the Lardner Park Hay and Silage Demonstration Day in regional Victoria in September. The event provided a chance for mower, rake, tedder and baler manufacturers to demonstrate their latest models and explain the design benefits of each to those in attendance – who were predominately livestock and dairy farmers. Construction has started on a new pipeline that will boost the volume of water available to horticulture growers and expand production in regional Western Australia. It will increase the current water capacity from 183 litres per second to more than 550 once completed. Construction company SSP Diverse is contracted to build the 25km Northern Borefield Pipeline as part of the WA Government’s $25 million Gascoyne Food Bowl project. Climate change is likely to worsen the disadvantages suffered by rural and regional communities, a recent Climate Council of Australia report reveals. On the Frontline: Climate Change & Rural Communities finds the increase in extreme weather events is disproportionately affecting those in rural areas, causing serious social, health and economic impacts. Direct effects such as crop productivity are relatively straightforward to quantify, but indirect impacts including changes to the distribution and incidence of pests and diseases, altered seasonality and work schedules, and pressures on the agricultural workforce are more complex. Global warming is predicted to result in an increase in extreme weather events such as droughts, floods and heatwaves. Making sure your farm is a safe workplace helps avoid accidents and increase income and profits, according to the Rural Industries Research & Development Corporation. Statistics show that agriculture is Australia’s most dangerous job, with 686 workplace fatalities being recorded in the industry between 2003 and 2014. However, Primary Industries Health and Safety Partnership (PIHSP) advisory panel chair Gordon Gregory says improving safety isn’t hard if you follow five basic steps to identify risks and fix them. These are: 1. Consult – involve your workers 2. Identify hazards – look for unsafe conditions and practices 3. Assess the risk – for each hazard, consider likely outcomes 4. An American big cat, pumas are known by several different names including cougar, panther and mountain lion. In some areas, these wild cats are becoming rarer. However, the Austrian-built Case IH Puma range is experiencing anything but a decline. In fact, it is thriving.
