Nationwide tractor sales in November were down 15 per cent for the month, leaving the year to date (YTD) position around at 2 per cent below where it was in 2017, as the impact of the drought continues to take its toll. By years’ end we broke a five-year cycle of continuously increasing tractor sales volumes and we expect 2019 to be much the same. It was a spate of harvester fires, a fact of life for Aussie pulse farmers, which brought the frustrated farmer into the Horsham Hydraulics workshop two summers ago. The family company’s operations director Eddy Nagorcka says 2016 had been a bad year for harvest fires – with heavy crops, volatile dust and no prior rains creating the perfect circumstances for a potential blaze. Looking to break the eight and 12-hour Guinness World Records for harvesting, the Stewart Farms Partnership from Yorkville, Illinois, harvested 43,740 bushels (1,224.7 tonnes) of corn after eight hours, and 63,770 bushels (1,785.6 tonnes) after the 12-hour mark, taking it to the win. Despite 12mm of rain falling the previous day, harvesting commenced at 9am in a field in Illinois. Brothers Bob and Brad Stewart of Stewart Farms managed the task. Hooking the 405 horsepower (302kW) Challenger up to a 14-yard scoop for some earthworks on the outskirts of Morrinsville, NZ, made for an interesting start to the day. More used to driving tractors and farm implements, this was a definite change of pace. Having never driven this particular tractor or a scoop of this size, I found the Challenger surprisingly quick, even pulling a fully laden load. Working alongside a 180hp (134kW) Cat bulldozer pulling an older scoop, it was interesting to observe the traditional Cat workhorse in action alongside the highly spec’d Challenger. The sugar cane harvest in the Bundaberg region of Queensland starts around June and is generally ongoing until about December of each year. The leafy tops of the plant are what the team at Australia’s largest sugar cane mulch manufacturer Oreco Group Childers use to create its popular garden mulch. Ideal for vegetable gardens, it’s also useful for general garden use as “a good all-rounder”. The organisation has been busy supplying the likes of Bunnings and nurseries nationwide for many years with its mulch, which is packaged at its Isis Central premises near Childers.
