Lychee farmer Martin Joyce has upgraded to the new 2000-litre Silvan Supaflo sprayer system to simplify labour-intensive jobs. Joyce operates a 13ha farm near Ingham, North Queensland, and farms 2500 lychee trees. He says his trees are roughly 30 years old and can be very large, making them difficult to spray and prune – especially since he’s getting on in years himself. Joyce says the Silvan Supaflo’s larger tank size and updated features have made life a lot easier. He made the decision to buy the unit after previously owning and operating a Silvan Suntuff 1000 sprayer system which dated back to 1996. Recently I found myself contemplating a couple of boxes sitting on my desk … inside them were a pair of new Narva Ultima 215 LED driving lights. It was clear that I was going to need to hook them up to something to try them out. The CSIRO has secured access to one of the world’s most sophisticated high-performance satellites, allowing Australian scientists and farmers to better monitor crops, check plant biomass and soil moisture and assess flood risks, among other benefits. Local scientists will have direct control over which data the satellite collects over our region. Due for launch later this year, the NovaSAR satellite will provide CSIRO and the wider Australian research community with access to an advanced form of radar technology known as S-band Synthetic Aperture Radar, or S-band SAR, which provides high-resolution images of Earth from space. Hyundai Forklifts Australia has bridged the gap between its 160D-9 and 180D-9 heavy-duty forklift trucks by releasing the 160D-9L. This is a diesel counterbalanced model designed to move large, heavy material such as containers, concrete, steel and timber. The new forklift has a lift capacity of 16 tonnes and a load centre of 1200mm. Its chassis is the same size as the 18-tonne 180D-9 but its overall length is 30cm shorter, which helps when working space is an issue. The truck is driven by a Cummins QSB6.7 engine which pumps out 122kW and meets Tier-4 Final emissions standards. The South Australian company began making parts used to repair metal vineyard trellis posts for Adelaide’s Ocvitti about six years ago. Baler specialist McHale has updated its V660 and V640 balers to produce higher quality bales at speed. The units’ design improvements include: an increased rotor diameter of 40mm to improve volume of intake; new crop augers designed to direct crop evenly into the rotor; and a flexible floor that adjusts itself to allow larger lumps of grass to feed through to the chamber, as well as to assist the increased intake capacity and flow of the crop. Specialising in hay baling and pasture renovation, Pratt contracts from his home in Penola, 50km north of Mount Gambier. Pratt, who previously used a 26-row seed drill with six-inch spacings as his main drill, bought his new Duncan AS6100 in April. Pratt says he’d looked at a few different brands but went with the New Zealand-made Duncan as he’d done a dairy study in New Zealand in 1994 and felt that farmers in NZ were some of the best at growing grass in the world. “The Duncan is a true pasture renovation machine and that’s the line we are going down with our contracting,” he says. It is clear that the various well-publicised weather events that have been occurring across the country are now having an impact as expectations for another record season have been well and truly dampened. All-electric vehicles are increasingly being seen as more than mere novelties as pressure mounts to reduce emissions, but so far they have come with compromises in terms of the batteries’ charging and working time.
