A surveillance system from Melbourne-based Swann is helping a New South Wales blueberry farmer keep an eye on his assets from 17,000km away. The farmer, Ben Gudex, has been operating the property with his business partner for more than two years, but a recent decision to move to the UK has naturally meant it’s harder for him to stay in control of his farm and make sure it’s not being targeted by equipment or livestock thieves. In addition, the farm is also home to the other business owner’s elderly father, and there has been concern for his wellbeing – especially in times when he isn’t able to answer the phone due to poor mobile reception. Farm machinery manufacturer Claas is significantly increasing its research and development capacities with the construction of a new test centre for combine harvesters, forage harvesters and tractors at the company’s headquarters in Harsewinkel, Germany. Due to open early next year, the 15 million facility will merge several test laboratories at the site into a single, state-of-the-art complex. The new complex will boast 8000 square metres of floor space – the equivalent of about 40 full-size tennis courts – and more than 200 individual workstations and laboratories. While April was another strong month for sales of agricultural equipment across Australia, we saw sales of larger (100-200hp) tractors pause, largely due to the extended Easter/Anzac Day break combined with the extreme weather conditions experienced along the eastern seaboard. In general terms, tractor sales volumes were down for the month but remain 2 per cent ahead of the same time last year. Victorian sales recorded a solid bounce, up 10 per cent in the month and 14 per cent ahead of last year, while New South Wales and Queensland are both in line with last year. WA and SA, which haven’t received the rainfall seen in the eastern states, are reporting bumpy sales months on low volumes. Buyers there are tending to be a bit cautious, but full-year predictions…

Let’s address the elephant in the room. Yes, Chinese-manufactured vehicles don’t have a great track record in Australia. Cheap and cheerful only worked for a bit before issues around build quality, dealer back up, parts availability and, in some cases, reliability kicked in. Innovate Ag’s world-first plant-based insecticide Sero-X has been launched at the company’s headquarters in Wee Waa, North West NSW. The company says Sero-X is the result of more than 15 years of trials and research into the insecticidal properties of butterfly pea, which led to the identification of peptides and cyclotides found in the legume. East Wind is another of the Chinese-made brands starting to make an impact on the Australian market. Unlike many of the others, though, East Wind is an Aussie-created and controlled brand made to spec in China. In 1977, on the islands of French Polynesia, government authorities released a predatory snail. They hoped this introduction would effectively control another species of invasive snail, previously introduced to supply escargot. Instead, by the early 1980s, scientists were reporting that alarming declines of native snail populations. Within 10 years, 48 native snail species (genus Partula) had been driven to extinction in the wild. The extinction of the Partula is notorious partially because these snails were, before going extinct, the study subjects of the first test in nature of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. In the decades since, attempts to control and eradicate invasive species have become common, generally with far better results.
