John Deere has unveiled two new flagship 6R series tractors. The 6230R and 6250R (pictured) are both powered by 6-cylinder engines that produce 171kW and 186kW respectively. According to the manufacturer, the new models have both been specifically designed to meet the needs of contractors and arable farmers. The new tractors are also said to be very lightweight for their size, weighing in at 9.3 tonnes. This weight, combined with the maximum permissible weight of 15 tonnes, also means the tractors have a 5.7-tonne payload. BMW subsidiary Designworks has teamed up with John Deere to design a next-generation backhoe Unveiled at this year’s CONEXPO-CON/AGG show in Las Vegas, the Designworks/John Deere backhoe utilises new-age materials and technological innovations to create a revolutionary concept through a design process known as ‘Fixstern’. According to Designworks, ‘Fixstern’ or ‘fixed star’ is a holistic and innovative research and design process that has been pioneered by BMW. BMW says that the process creates a “far-future vision, a focal point that all stakeholders can share in common, align to, and drive towards”. Working in relentless heat is a fact of life for south-west Queensland cattle grazers Dagworth Grazing. You have to be tough to last in the outback, and your machines need to be even tougher. Dagworth recently acquired an SDLG LG959 wheel loader it says is more than capable of handling the punishing daily conditions on the station, where record temperatures of 47.2 degrees Celsius were recorded in February. February’s heatwave in the area (about 60km north of Georgetown, Qld) saw a notable impact on many local businesses. Two compressed air systems are keeping the wheels turning at Ingleburn, New South Wales-based mag wheel repair and refurbishment company All Mag Wheel Repairs. The company handles all makes and models of mag wheels, handling problems such as chips, kerb damage and gutter rash. Each mag wheel that comes through All Mag is hand refurbished by one of the team’s technicians, who use compressed air extensively in the repair and refurbishment process; from inflating tyres to powering pneumatic tools and spraying paint. JCB has introduced a skid-steer loader with a telescopic boom, the Teleskid, and says the new machine can reach 60 per cent further forward than other skid steers on the market. The Teleskid is available in both wheeled and tracked configurations. On top of the improved forward reach, the Teleskid is also able to dig below its chassis to a depth of around one metre. The Teleskid also has a reach height 8 per cent higher than other skid steers. AQueensland farmer is using a compact Iseki TG6370P tractor to run his 40-acre vegetable farm and his nearby 160-acre sheep and cattle farm in South East Queensland. After owning larger 100hp-plus tractors for years, Merv Keevers (pictured) and his wife, Joan, decided they needed a smaller tractor with a shuttle shift and slow snail-and-tortoise gearing for planting. “Many tractors have gone away from the shuttle shift, which makes for ease of operation, especially for young people,” Merv says. “But I definitely wanted it.” He says he’d previously worked with a shuttle shift on other farms, “but they didn’t have the slow gearing and the tractor was idling all day long, which wasn’t good for the engine”. “I wanted the snail-and-tortoise gearbox because you can keep the revs up and it’s…

Manitowoc has unveiled its ‘lighter, longer, stronger’ Grove TMS9000-2 100-tonne-capacity next-generation truck crane in the United States. The new truck crane features a number of improvements over previous models, the company says. For a start, the TMS9000E is 363kg lighter than its predecessor, which enables a wider range of flexibility in carrying counterweight, cribbing and other items. Though the TMS9000-2 is lighter, its boom length and capacity have both increased. The crane features a new, 51.6m six-section Megaform boom that utilises Grove’s Twin-Lock pinning system. Power take-off (PTO) shafts used on tractors have been involved in a large number of serious and disabling entanglement accidents, many resulting in death, so what can you do to minimise the risks? As a first step, the Queensland Government recommends the purchase of a variety of guards, shields and couplings designed to try to eliminate or minimise the risk of entanglement. It is important that these are fitted and maintained in good working condition to avoid injury to workers and bystanders.
