Want to get a vertical farm off the ground? While jumping on the venture capital bandwagon may be tempting, you might think first about working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
There are a number of grants available through the agency that could be applied to vertical farming, including the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, which awards grants to, among other things, increase food production, mitigate impacts of climate variability, address water availability issues and ensure food safety and security.
Or consider a USDA microloan. As stated on the microloan programs webpage, these funds are specifically geared toward helping “small, beginning farmer, niche and nontraditional farm operations,” including “those using hydroponic, aquaponic, organic and vertical growing methods.”(fsa.usda.gov)…
