Every February, Jeffrey Lee and his honeybees leave North Carolina to take part in what has become the biggest insect migration worldwide—when billions of honeybees travel to pollinate California’s 1.3 million acres of almond orchards. As a commercial beekeeper, Jeffrey sends about 1,200 colonies (or hives) to help with the pollination effort, and with each bee colony housing an average 40,000 bees, that’s 48 million traveling to California on Jeffrey’s trucks alone. If it weren’t for honeybees and professional beekeepers like Jeffrey (he prefers the term “bee shepherd”), California’s almond industry would go bust. In 2016, the latest year for which there is data, 1.59 million honeybee colonies traveled to the almond orchards to pollinate the trees. My husband, Bobby, and I maintain a hobby farm, and we love animals: We have two blue heelers, 12 hens, a rooster, a barn cat and a pet goat named Charming. Sam and Luke are our livestock guardian dogs, a mix of Anatolian shepherd and Great Pyrenees. Sam, 9, and Luke, 8, are sister and brother, born a year apart. Together they look out for Charming the goat as well as 12 Katahdin sheep, which we raise for meat. We have new lambs each March, and the ewes often have twins and a few have triplets. HOME ON THE RANGE My husband’s parents, Joe and Connie Anderson, have about 100 head of Hereford/black Angus cross cattle on their ranch in Idaho. The land has been in their family for more than 100 years, and Ryan and I plan to keep it going. We winter the cattle in lower country along the river, and summer them in a remote area on the Joseph Plains, between the Snake and Salmon rivers. Trailing is done on horseback, as it is steep, rugged river country and there are no roads. Welcome to our dairy farm in eastern Marathon County, Wisconsin. Our 240-acre farm was shaped by a slow-moving glacier long ago. As I write this I can hear the crashing of the Eau Claire River, as the ice has only recently given way to spring at the nearby Eau Claire Dells, a mile from us as the crow flies. On our side of the river those glaciers left a mix of heavy clay soils and silt loams that grow abundant grasses and clovers. My wife, Wendy, and I bought our farm in 1989. Wendy grew up near Milwaukee, and I am from the Chicago area. We both have degrees in dairy science and were deeply influenced by relatives who were dairy farmers. Q We have just put up a new barn. We have an abnormal amount of flies and huge spiders. How do I kill them? Growing up on a farm near Tangent, Oregon, I began driving tractors at the age of 7. I earned degrees in mathematics and engineering, and later my wife and I moved to California, where I worked in aerospace and Dianne was a library volunteer coordinator. After retiring we returned to Oregon, and now we spend our time fishing, volunteering and playing with cars and tractors. I got the idea for this project while reading Ferguson Furrows magazine, where I saw an ad for a model tractor called a TE-40. SEEING A TRACTOR RESTORATION PROJECT through to the end is difficult. I’ve rescued quite a few mechanics who got in over their heads. One area where folks often get stuck is in decal application. After spending so much time and money on a shiny new paint job, they don’t want to mess it up in the final step. The good news is that with a few simple tricks, installing decals can be a breeze. Tractor decals come in two forms: one-piece Mylar decals, with a clear film joining the lettering together, and vinyl decals, with every letter as an individual piece.
