Each year, places across the country throw open their doors and give people the chance to see hidden places and try new experiences for free. Many events will adopt this year’s theme – Astounding Inventions – offering a celebration of the cutting-edge creations that make our lives easier, as well as the imaginative inventors behind them. Alongside stories of wonders, the festival will highlight some of the blunders, fads and outright failures that pepper England’s rich history of innovation. Was it ecclesiastical, or a free mason’s or some other society? I have always been fascinated by the meaning behind jewellery, and rings in particular, as they are powerful symbols showing status at a distance. Engagement rings In the sixties, an advert running in many magazines proclaimed ‘a diamond is forever’ – long before the 1971 James Bond film of the similar name. The advert was for solitaire engagement rings, a single stone symbolising eternity, and originated in the De Beers 1947 diamond advertising campaign. With all its faults, fibs, flaws, omissions and occasionally eye-watering insensitivity, censuses have arguably been the family historian’s greatest friend. I still remember the long-ago frisson of finding 3x great-grandparents in the 1851 Census, recorded as local carriers. I’m pretty sure I squealed. I was at college doing English and Social History, and it felt just as if two Thomas Hardy characters had jumped off a page and into my own story. Being then a townie who’d always longed for the rural life it was magical. It took years to piece together the ups and downs of their lives. Perhaps the most poignant find was the newspaper account of the sale of their carrier’s cart and horse after my ancestor’s death, at which time his wife became distracted and ended…

With the family portrait once holding prime position in the home, only 13% of Brits currently hang their family photos on their walls and one in ten display them elsewhere, such as on shelves or mantlepieces. Others store their family images digitally, either on their smartphone or their computer. Despite one in 10 admitting to not having any photos of their family on show, more than a third say they want more family photos, rising to 45% amongst those aged 18 to 34. T he taxes paid by our ancestors have left behind some remarkable records. From the late 14th century Poll Taxes, providing us with evidence of the emergence of fixed surnames, to the Restoration era Hearth Tax, which produced lists of virtually every householder in the country, the documents can help us to locate the whereabouts of our forebears at times when the more familiar parish registers might let us down. Genealogical challenges ... Although genealogy has a well-respected academic side, it generally considers the internet, and digital resources in general, as only good for derivative sources such as images and transcriptions, and not for publications. This field has high standards and produces quality work in traditional publications such as books and journals, but the internet is considered inappropriate for publication due to its transient and ephemeral nature. If we look to commercial genealogy then we see two quite different worlds: that of the generation of derivative sources that people can search, and that of online trees.
