Over the years, I’ve seen my share of damaged hardwood floors. Sometimes the flaw can be repaired with wood putty and a quick touch-up—other times surgery is required. Here are some tips to help you repair your own flooring trouble spots. STAIN AND FINISH TO MATCH I prefer to do this first. Test some stain colors on new floorboards and apply some urethane. WOOD VIBRATIONS I love my portable planer. I feed rough, ugly boards in and beautiful boards come out. But until recently I had never clamped it to my worktable. I’d just reposition it as it vibrated around the table. My technique changed last week when I fed in a 6 -ft. board and turned around to grab the next board. While my back was turned, the exiting board caught the planer’s power cord. As the board exited the planer, the cord stayed taut and the planer pushed itself to the edge of the table.
