Canada is a vast country covering more than 3.8 million square miles. Its population is just as diverse as its landscape. Here are five facts to get you started. 1. The Haida are just one of hundreds of First Nations people of Canada. The group lived on Haida Gwaii, an archipelago off the coast of British Columbia. Long before Europeans settled Canada, First Nations people lived throughout the region. From Inuit in the Arctic regions to Mi’kmaq of the Atlantic provinces, hundreds of different groups were the original inhabitants of the area. Unfortunately, many Europeans saw the native population as a problem to be solved. In the late 1800s, Canada’s neighbors to the south established residential schools for Native American children. Children were taken from their families and sent to live at these schools. In 1879, Canada’s Prime Minister asked politician Nicholas Flood Davin to prepare a report on U.S. residential schools. Toronto is very diverse and continues to welcome new immigrants. However, most recent immigrants live in the outer suburbs of Toronto. The Stanley Cup is the most important prize in hockey. It’s named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the governor general of Canada, who donated the original trophy in 1892. Hockey pucks are frozen before they’re used in play so players can control them on the ice better. Ice hockey is the official winter sport of Canada. (The official summer sport is lacrosse.) Originally, pucks may have been frozen discs of cow poop. Later, they were carved out of wood or cork, and finally were made of rubber. Wayne Gretzky holds the all-time record for the most points scored: 2,857 points over 20 seasons. For many moons, in the woods near Kitchigami (kit-chee-GAH-mee), the Ojibwe stripped birch bark and cut limbs to make wigwams and canoes. They fished in the big lake (Lake Superior) and harvested wild rice and corn. They gathered sarsaparilla, mugwort, and other herbs for healing the sick. During Lake-Freezing Moon (November), they hunted for deer, moose, and bear. One winter during Gitci-manito-gizis (gichee-MAN-i-toe-gee-zis), a terrible sickness swept through an Ojibwe Village. People burned sage and cedar boughs in their wigwams to purify the air. The mide (medicine man) chanted songs to attract healing sprits to each wigwam. The SS Nieuw Amsterdam docked at Pier 21, a brand-new immigration facility in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on March 8, 1928. Fifty-one passengers disembarked, the first of nearly a million immigrants who would pass through Pier 21’s doors over the next four decades. Before Pier 21 was built, immigrants who landed at Halifax were received at Pier 2. Compared to its predecessor, Pier 21 was modern and spacious. Its facilities included immigration offices, cutting-edge hospital and quarantine areas, detention quarters, and jail cells. Freight was unloaded on the lower level, and passengers were received on the upper level. A large sign that read “WELCOME HOME TO CANADA” greeted newcomers as they arrived. New arrivals waited in a reception area for their turn to meet with immigration and customs officials, who checked…

African American men, women, and children began moving to Canada in large numbers after the United States Congress enacted the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. (The word “fugitive” refers to a person who has escaped from a place or is in hiding.) At that time, many escaped slaves were living in freedom in northern states where slavery had been abolished. The Fugitive Slave Act allowed for the pursuit and capture of escaped slaves anywhere in the United States. Between 1850 and 1860, as many as 20,000 African Americans moved to Canada. There are many special foods, many of them from specific regions or provinces, that you can try. Poutine Poutine comes from the eastern province of Quebec. Poutine is a dish of French fries topped with brown gravy and cheese curds. Legend has it that the dish started in a diner when customers kept asking for cheese on top of their fries.
