The Berbers are the earliest known inhabitants of the western Mediterranean coast of Africa, having lived in the area since 3000 B.C. However, “Berber” is the name given to them by outsiders. Some Berbers call themselves “Imazighen,” which means “the free men.”
Today, Berbers live in parts of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. Their home is the Magreb, the northern part of the Sahara Desert, and the Sahel.
