IT’S NOT EVERY DAY you see a woman driving a custom 1971 F-100 bumpside that’s bagged and body dropped. It’s also not every day you meet a woman who put hundreds of work into building the truck with her dad. In 2011, Lindsay Thibodeaux’s dad bought a stock ’71 F-100 with the intention of bagging it and cruising around town and going to shows. Before he could begin to work on it, a 1966 Chevy Carryall caught his eye, and the F-100 was set aside. GROWING UP IN AMARILLO, Texas, Mike Reed had a considerable amount of time on his hands. Luckily, Mike’s father always had some type of hot rod or race car that Mike could work on or race. Starting at the young age of 13, Mike was already in his father’s 1972 Chevrolet truck making passes down the drag strip. By the time he was 16, Mike and his father had built and raced a 1967 Camaro, and then restored a 1967 Camaro convertible that Mike himself painted. In the early ’90s, the Reed family made a move to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area where Mike began the restoration of a 1970 El Camino with a 505 big block. This issue, we find ourselves fortunate enough to be graced with one of the finest examples, and hailing from Calgary, all the way north. WE RECENTLY RETURNED TO THE MAGGIE Valley Festival Grounds for the sixth annual Moonshine Valley F-100s show, a Surfboard Promotions event hosted by promoter Rodney Buckner. On the Thursday before the opening of the show, an organized cruise along the Blue Ridge Parkway was an awesome way to see the local scenery and some nice rides. Once the show opened on Friday morning, the town of Maggie Valley, North Carolina, came alive. This year, 100-plus trucks competed for Top 50 awards and, of course, Best of Show. Maggie Valley has plenty of tourist attractions for those who weren’t from the area, including the Wheels Through Time Museum of Discovery Channel fame. OFTEN, THE BEST PART OF A custom truck is the story behind it. How the process began, the inspiration and hurdles that occurred along the way, along with the joy upon completion are as important as the modifications themselves. Stuart Cofer from Athens, Georgia, is a certified plant professional, an occupation not normally associated with custom trucks.
