Super-size, high-functioning appliances for a family who love to cook and entertain; a sociable breakfast bar where they could sit and chat with a coffee or use their laptops; and a large wine fridge. How did you decide on the layout? Our greatest challenge was working out where the kitchen was going to go and that all depended on how we adjusted the internal structure of the barn. Janette and Duncan wanted to make the most of the sea view at the gable end and, in the end, it all worked out very naturally. What was the brief here? Charlotte wanted to complement the existing kitchen – which was originally the long run where the stove is – with a new island, plenty of storage and a place to sit and eat. She didn’t want to hide anything away, but wanted it to feel like a friendly, usable space. She has all her kitchen equipment hanging above the stove in front of an antique mirror splashback and there is an original Roundhouse glazed cabinet, which Charlotte uses to showcase her glassware. When clients walk into a kitchen showroom carrying a stack of interiors magazines, pages neatly turned at the corners, it’s usually a sign they’ve got a specific style in mind. However, when this particular couple visited Diane Berry Kitchens, their individual inspiration sat at opposite ends of the style spectrum. ‘They were such a mix,’ remembers designer Diane Berry. ‘He loves ornamental glamour and gold, while she’s more Italian – smooth, sleek and neutral in her styling. What did the client outline in their brief ? They wanted a functional family kitchen for cooking and entertaining. The initial brief was for the furniture to look as if it had been found in a skip in Paris! The focus was on practicality with plenty of storage and freestanding units, including a flexible rolling island that would adjust to the family’s needs. We aimed to bring together form and function along with a distinctive rustic character in keeping with the Victorian property. Were there any challenges along the way? How did you plan the layout? I started with the main zones, such as the vanity, shower and WC area, and kept them all distinct from one another. I used a false wall to serve a dual purpose – firstly, to incorporate a much-needed recess into the shower area for storage, and, secondly, as a support for the floating granite worktops used in the basin area. The most successful dressing room I’ve planned was between the bedroom and the bathroom. • Don't presume your current wardrobes are making efficient use of space. I always look at my clients’ existing cupboards, then I plan short hanging to maximise storage for most clothes. Next it’s long hanging, then shelves, drawers and other pull-out specialist fittings such as display shelves, trouser presses and shoe rails. • Do make use of a box room; we can work with anything from two square metres in size. Seek advice from a professional to make the most of the space – for instance, smaller rooms might need sliding rather than pull-out doors. • Don’t be afraid to maximise storage right up to the ceiling.…

How did you create the layout of the space? Entering from the hall, the kitchen opens out in front of you. The island sits centrally in the room and is designed as the main prep area with a large integrated sink and boiling water tap, plus seating on the ‘non-working’ side that’s ideal for the clients’ children to have breakfast or for friends to gather for pre-dinner drinks. The Aga cooker is framed by a contemporary panelled canopy and flanked by large countertop cupboards with bi-fold doors for small appliances and storage. Renowned for his award-winning fusion cooking, Kiwi chef Peter Gordon completed his training in Melbourne before travelling through Asia, where his eclectic culinary philosophy was developed.
