Can you tell us about the design of the cabinetry? There’s a classic-contemporary feel to the furniture because it combines traditional Shaker style with a modern, strong black finish. Made in Sweden, the natural grain of the oak shows through the black stain, which adds an element of warmth, while the industrial-style handles add a little extra edge to the design. How did you go about fulfilling the brief ? There were certain specifications Alexandra and Ben wanted – a range cooker, a Butler sink and an overall industrial feel with satin brass handles. They were particularly keen on having a divide between the utility room and the kitchen with Crittall-style doors so the rooms could be separate yet linked. We worked around a kick-back in the wall so they could have a clear run from the utility room through to the dining area. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE LIGHTING CONFIGURATION HERE?  The lighting has been divided into zones. Firstly, LED ceiling lights were included for good overall lighting, then we have secondary LED lighting over the eating area at the island. Illumination in the glass cabinets gives low-level accent lighting, while a low-level LED strip on the mirrored plinth creates a floating effect around the island. All lighting can be switched separately, depending on mode, ambiance and functionality. The orangery has perimeter lighting, which can also be dimmed according to mood. Falling for a characterful property is a wonderful thing, but when it comes to designing your dream kitchen, it can present any number of challenges. Because of their age, listed buildings in particular may come with quirks that can’t be ironed out because of the strict guidelines that are in place. How would you describe the style here? The house was a period property, so it was important that the design was sympathetic to the era. We opted for classic black detailing in the brassware, the handles on furniture, shower frame, accessories and the heated towel rail as they create a timeless feel. Which room sizes and shapes suit wet rooms best? You can construct a wet room anywhere; you just need to consider the planning and design. A wet room can be squeezed into a small space of one-and-a-half metres by one metre, which still leaves room for a toilet and basin. Although not essential, installing a screen can prevent the whole room from getting wet, particularly in smaller spaces. How can we ensure water is drained away effectively? The whole space needs to be completely waterproof and the tanking system will depend on the substructure of the room itself, so it’s important to consult a professional for advice. How did you get into this career? A lot of hard work, nerve and passion. We formally trained as actors originally and worked in West End theatre and on television for nearly ten years before we began to make the creative transition to design. It was a slow move and we still see ourselves first and foremost as creatives; we simply moved from acting to designing. We don’t like to be put into boxes. What was the brief from the homeowners? It was always going to be a traditional style, and the couple wanted a mixture of colours with the island in a darker shade. When they came in to see us, they fell in love with the China Blue colour in our showroom – although we ended up using Chalk Blue. Long-distance telephone calls, video presentations and international flights might not sound like your usual lines of communication when renovating a home, but this combination enabled Amanda and Ian Sanderson to successfully complete their house project while living overseas. The couple were based in Dubai, where Ian was working for BAE Systems, when they purchased the four-bedroom Victorian semi-detached property in Lancashire in preparation for moving back to the UK. How did you fulfil the brief ? Ben’s vision of being true to the spirit of the original barn dictated the choice of authentic, utilitarian materials in the kitchen/family area: concrete, oak and stainless steel, which references the original barn’s metal framework. The kitchen/family room opens up at the centre into the original double-height space and, thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, the room is also rooted in the surrounding landscape, just as the barn was. Upon moving into their four-bedroom farmhouse in Rotherham, Matthew and Pam Hearsum began making plans to take full advantage of the glorious view of the Grade-I listed church at the back of the house. ‘The existing kitchen was a typical farmhouse style with oak dressers on the back wall and an oak table in the centre of the kitchen,’ explains Matthew, ‘but we wanted to create a space that was more light and spacious. What were the key challenges you faced when designing this kitchen? The galley kitchen is in a long but narrow room that opens out to a much lighter space with the dining table at the end.
