Tell us about the kitchen cabinetry. The furniture is classic and traditionally made with an Edwardian style in-frame panelled door with inset profile, but what really makes this kitchen stand out is the level of detail in the design and the fine craftsmanship. For example, the fridge freezers and wine cabinet are encapsulated within a hand-carved, curved marble frame with a solid brass inlay and another of stained American walnut. Testament to what a few clever design ideas can achieve, this bright and spacious kitchen in a four-bedroom converted 1850s barn in the Staffordshire town of Eccleshall is barely recognisable from the space it once was. WHAT WAS YOUR BRIEF FOR THE PROJECT? We were asked to design a space that functions and feels like a modern kitchen in use, but has the warmth that traditional furniture brings. WERE THERE ANY STRUCTURAL CHANGES MADE? Originally, there were four separate rooms that were knocked through to create the current living space. The ceiling and roof were reworked which was quite complex, but this didn’t affect the kitchen in any way. WHAT WAS THE MAIN CHALLENGE OF THE PROJECT? The space was large but disjointed. The room was always going to be, first and foremost, a living space. That necessitated a soft and contemporary feel. • Look out for appliances with a good energy rating. The better the rating, the less energy it uses, which makes it more environmentally friendly as well as being efficient in its everyday operation and cheaper to run with lower energy bills. Energy-efficient appliances also offer the greatest opportunity to reduce CO› emissions. • Appliances used to be rated from A to G with A+++ being the most efficient, but the newest system looks like this: A-x% – for example A-40%. How did you create the layout? As in any bedroom, the position of the bed, as the largest item, is usually the starting point, and so it was here. It slots neatly opposite the window, with room for side tables. The half-height wall around the staircase dictated the position of the dressing table, leaving a wide corner of the room for the bath, which we set at an angle to highlight its grandeur. It was exactly the kind of brief that kitchen designer Nicholas McColgan thrives on – a huge area, created by four existing rooms being knocked through, that needed to be reimagined as a comfortable living room whilst incorporating a family kitchen. What are the best ways to introduce some rustic charm into a kitchen? A lot of the success in rustic-looking kitchens comes down to texture and materials. Country kitchens feel much closer to nature, and most have some sort of timber element. Touches of oak or pine add natural warmth and softness to a room, achieved through reclaimed flooring, freestanding furniture or worktops.
